Shari Franke, the oldest daughter of YouTube family vlogger Ruby Franke, is opening up about a really disturbing experience with one of her five siblings in the new Hulu docuseries Devil In The Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke. This series is set to drop on Thursday, February 27, and it dives into the shocking story of Franke's rise to fame and the troubling truths that came to light afterward, including serious allegations of child abuse that have shaken her family's previously public image.

Ruby Franke’s oldest daughter opens up about the abuse she experienced at home

In the new docuseries, Shari opened up about a time when she helped her younger brother, Chad Franke, clean up after he had been “beat really bad.” She mentioned, “I always felt bad when he got into trouble. He’d end up with a bloody nose, and I’d just bring him toilet paper, not really knowing what to do,” according to People.

Ruby and Kevin Franke became well-known for sharing their life as a family of eight in Utah on their popular YouTube channel, 8 Passengers. However, since 2020, viewers have expressed concerns about the couple's strict and controversial parenting style. As the family shared their daily lives, many online criticized their disciplinary methods, which led to increased scrutiny of their behavior and its effects on their kids.

Chad also revealed in the docuseries that the abuse was kept hidden from the audience, recalling “times where she blew up off camera. She would spank, whip, take the belt out and whip my butt. Pull down my pants, whip me.” At first, the couple brushed off viewers' worries about them taking away basic necessities as punishment, insisting that their six kids were safe.

Shari was worried about her brothers and sisters

In 2018, Ruby crossed paths with Jodi Hildebrandt, a former sex therapist and the creator of the religious social media platform ConneXions. They teamed up for a podcast promoting stricter parenting methods, and shortly after, Ruby cut ties with her mother, Shari. She also asked her husband and Chad to move out. Over time, Shari grew worried about the safety of her other siblings who were still living with Ruby.

Fast forward to August 2023, Ruby Franke and Jodi were arrested and faced charges of aggravated child abuse after Shari’s 12-year-old brother managed to escape from Jodi's place in Ivins, Utah, and informed the authorities about his malnutrition. Although Ruby’s estranged husband, Kevin, wasn’t charged, Shari later opened up about her experiences of abuse in her memoir, The House of My Mother: A Daughter’s Quest for Freedom.

By late 2023, Ruby and Jodi pleaded guilty to four counts of aggravated child abuse, and in February 2024, they were both sentenced to 4 to 30 years in prison, although the specific duration of their sentences is still being determined.
