Actor Sharad Kelkar's comeback to television in the series Tum Se Tum Tak has been attracting considerable attention, though not all of it is positive. He is receiving backlash for portraying a 46-year-old character who becomes romantically involved with a 19-year-old woman, leading to controversy over their 27-year age difference.
Sharad Kelkar’s show promo out
The promotional material for the show was unveiled on Sunday, depicting a romantic narrative between two individuals separated by a notable 27-year age difference, which has generated dissatisfaction among the audience.
The video introduces Niharika Chouksey's role as an energetic 19-year-old from a modest background, whose mother is eager to secure a suitable match for her. In contrast, Sharad Kelkar plays a 46-year-old wealthy businessman. The storyline reveals that, despite his professional achievements, he experiences a void in love and companionship. When his mother urges him to seek a partner, he dismisses the suggestion.
The promo wraps up with a scene in which Niharika's character gazes in awe as Sharad's private helicopter soars above her. A voice-over alludes to the unexpected yet forthcoming romance between the two characters.
Sharad Kelkar faces flak for new show
Fans have voiced their dissatisfaction with the show's narrative, particularly regarding the romantic relationship between the two main characters, which features a notable 27-year age difference. Many have taken to social media to express their disappointment and concerns, highlighting the unrealistic and potentially troubling representation of such a significant age gap in a romantic context.
"Displaying a relationship between a 19-year-old and a 46-year-old is excessive. Even a 35-year age difference would have been more acceptable. This pairing lacks any appeal for me," commented one user on social media.
Another fan remarked, "Why is it always the younger girl paired with the older boy? This theme and reasoning are repetitive."
"What troubles me is how Sharad agreed to participate in this," one user stated, while another questioned, "I didn't expect this from him. What led him to accept this role?"
"This age gap is similar to that between my father and my older sister. What are they thinking? (sic)," another user expressed, while another added, "This is utterly repulsive."
"Why promote such narratives? People might start normalizing these ideas in rural areas," one user pondered.
It is anticipated that the forthcoming show is a remake of the popular Marathi series, Tula Pahate Re, and will be directed by Prateek Sharma. The show is set to premiere on Zee TV.
