Shania Twain has recounted her struggles with body image issues that arose from her experiences with "abusive situations" during her early years. The singer known for "No One Needs to Know" expressed her longstanding insecurities regarding her body. She disclosed that during her formative years, she experienced numerous instances of inappropriate touching, which contributed to her discomfort in her skin.

The five-time Grammy Award winner recounted her experiences in abusive situations, stating, “You hate being a woman.” She further elaborated, “I hated being a girl,” indicating that the trauma she endured fueled her desire to become strong enough to protect herself from harassment.

Twain shared a memory of her mother inquiring about her career aspirations, to which she responded that she wanted to be a “bodybuilder.” She reminisced, “My mother asked, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ and I replied, ‘A bodybuilder.’” She explained that her goal was to become a formidable figure whom no one would dare to challenge.

The artist behind "You're Still the One" emphasized that her drive to gain strength stemmed from a need to ensure that no one could touch her without her consent. She also reflected on her teenage insecurities, stating, “I was hiding all through my teens. I hated having breasts, I hated having hips.” She attributed some of these feelings to the prevalence of very thin models during her childhood, which she associated with elegance and feminine beauty.

When asked about her journey to overcoming body image issues, Twain remarked, “Once I got behind the camera and began exploring clothes and fashion, I realized, ‘Wow, I’m a woman after all, and I think I might like it.’”

She noted that writing “Man, I Feel Like a Woman!” was a true celebration of her newfound self-acceptance. “I felt empowered behind the camera. I was like, ‘They can’t grab me. I’m safe,’” Twain confessed.
