Shabana Azmi Discusses Limited Showings of All We Imagine as Light Amid Pushpa 2's Triumph: Dedicated to Mainstream Film

Shabana Azmi expressed her views on the difficulties faced by parallel cinema in India, particularly highlighting the limited screenings of the internationally recognized film All We Imagine As Light, which is competing against the blockbuster Pushpa 2: The Rule.

Her remarks were made during the ADC (Art Design Culture Collective) event held on Thursday, organized by KHUSHII, an NGO founded by cricket legend Kapil Dev.

In her commentary on All We Imagine As Light

the acclaimed actor, who has won multiple National Awards, commended filmmaker Payal Kapadia for the film, which has garnered two Golden Globe nominations and a Critics Choice Awards nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Despite its international acclaim, the film faces challenges in attracting audiences in Indian cinemas due to the overwhelming popularity of Allu Arjun's Pushpa 2: The Rule.

Shabana emphasized the necessity for a robust theatrical release framework for such films, stating to ANI, “While mainstream films cannot be halted in the pursuit of cultivating audiences for diverse cinema, the global recognition of this film indicates a viable audience exists. We must foster the conditions for this film to reach its intended viewers.”

She further noted that smaller theatres and distributors must collaborate to provide independent films with the opportunity to be showcased. “A structured system for theatrical releases and distribution is essential to ensure these films are visible in smaller venues, where they are not burdened by the exorbitant rental costs associated with mainstream films. An entire ecosystem must be developed to facilitate the realization of extraordinary cinematic experiences,” she remarked.
