Sentry Rises: Marvel’s Godlike Antihero Takes Center Stage in Thunderbolts

When the initial teaser for Marvel's forthcoming film, Thunderbolts, was unveiled last year, Lewis Pullman's character was merely referred to as Bob. This led to widespread speculation regarding his potential portrayal of Sentry, the only Marvel superhero known by the name Bob or Robert. Recent footage has now confirmed this speculation: Robert 'Bob' Reynolds, one of Marvel's most formidable characters, is set to join the MCU. Here’s why his character is significant.
Who (or rather what) is Sentry?
Sentry, a relatively recent addition to the Marvel Comics universe, was created by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee. He made his debut in the comics in 2000. Within the narrative, Bob Reynolds is depicted as a middle-aged, overweight individual who lacks any recollection of his superhero identity, Sentry. Possessing the power equivalent to one million exploding suns, he has been forgotten by the world due to his own actions; Reynolds erased the memories of everyone on Earth, including his own, to protect them from his arch-nemesis, Void, who is also a manifestation of his split personality. How the MCU will explore this dynamic remains to be seen, but it is highly likely that both Sentry and Void will make their first appearances in Thunderbolts.
Just how powerful is Sentry?
The expression 'the power of one million exploding suns' is quite illustrative. Sentry's abilities stem from a super soldier serum, akin to the one that transformed Steve Rogers into Captain America. However, this serum is significantly more potent—reportedly a hundred thousand times more powerful, as indicated in the comics. The narrative portrays Sentry as nearly divine, possessing omnipotent capabilities. He has triumphed over the symbiote Carnage, bested Thor, and even defeated Terrax, a being capable of cleaving planets in two. On one occasion, Sentry managed to overcome a version of Ultron, whereas in the films, it required the combined efforts of all Avengers to vanquish the supervillain. One comic series even described Sentry as 'stronger than all the Avengers combined.' His strength can vary depending on the writer and the storyline. Nevertheless, it is clear that Sentry and Void represent forces of nature, far too powerful for mortals to contend with.
This raises an intriguing question—how do the Thunderbolts intend to confront Void if it manifests from within Bob Reynolds? This premise adds an interesting layer to the final film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 5.
