Actor-singer Selena Gomez has addressed the ongoing racism controversy involving her Emilia Pérez co-star, Karla Sofia Gascón. She has affirmed her commitment to the Oscar-nominated film, stating unequivocally that she has "no regrets" regarding her participation in the project.
Selena reacts
During a session at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Sunday night, Selena discussed the controversy, as reported by the Hollywood Reporter. When a moderator inquired about her well-being amidst the turmoil surrounding Emilia Pérez’s Academy Awards campaign, Selena replied, “I’m really good... Some of the magic has disappeared, but I choose to continue to be proud of what I’ve done, and I’m just, I’m just grateful and live with no regrets.”
She further emphasized, “And I would do this movie over and over again if I could.” Her remarks were met with applause from the audience, and a video of the exchange has circulated on social media.
The stir
Karla, who portrays Emilia Pérez in the Netflix film, has faced significant backlash following the resurfacing of her past offensive social media posts, which included racially charged remarks about Black individuals, immigrants, and Islam, in late January.
In the wake of the controversy, Karla, who made history as the first openly transgender performer nominated for an Oscar in an acting category, has issued multiple apologies. She has also defended herself against allegations of racism and xenophobia during an extensive interview with CNN en Español.
Karla stated, “I cannot renounce a nomination because what I have done is a job and what is being valued is my acting work. And I cannot renounce a nomination either because I have not committed any crime nor have I harmed anyone; I am not a racist, nor am I anything that all these people have taken it upon themselves to try to make others believe that I am.”
Zoe Saldana, her co-star, has distanced herself from Karla's remarks. "It saddens me greatly because I do not endorse such views, and I have no tolerance for negative rhetoric directed at any group," Zoe stated during a Q&A session in London.
Previously, director Jacques Audiard of Emilia Pérez announced that he has ended his association with Karla. In the meantime, Karla has indicated that she will refrain from making further comments regarding the film.
