Singer-actor Selena Gomez was moved to tears following US President Donald Trump’s decision to deport undocumented immigrants. Sharing her emotions on Instagram Stories, Selena posted a video of herself crying, though the post was later deleted.

Selena Gomez cried over deportation of Mexicans from the US

Dressed in a black outfit, the singer appeared to record the video from her home. The clip, later shared by X (formerly Twitter) user @SELENAT0RSARMY, showed Selena expressing her heartbreak: “I just wanted to say that I’m so sorry. All my people are being attacked. The children. I don’t understand. I’m so sorry. I wish I could do something, but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.”

Internet is divided on Selena's weeping video

Selena also added the text “I’m sorry” accompanied by a Mexican flag to her Instagram Stories. The video, which quickly circulated on social media, drew mixed reactions. One user tweeted, “There is a legal way to come into the United States. Why don’t they try that?”

One comment criticized, “It’s 2025, are we seriously still grabbing our phones to record ourselves crying??” However, others defended Selena passionately. “People laughing at her are disgusting. Her people are being deported, including children. She has every right to cry. She comes from Mexican immigrant parents and was given an opportunity. We love you, Selena,” wrote one supporter. Another fan tweeted, “This is heartbreaking. Can you let her express her emotions? Imagine being a huge artist and feeling helpless for her people—it must be devastating.”

Later, Selena posted a note on her Instagram Stories saying, “Apparently it’s not ok to show empathy for people,” but she eventually deleted it.

In 2019, Selena produced the Netflix documentary Living Undocumented, which explored immigration issues and the lives of eight undocumented families in the US during the Trump administration.

About US deportation

The U.S. president has pledged to execute the largest deportation wave in history. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum recently stated that her country received approximately 4,000 deported migrants during Trump’s first week back in office, which she noted was "not a substantial increase" from the usual rate. From January to November 2024, over 190,000 people were deported to Mexico, averaging around 17,200 deportations per month, according to government data.

Since his return to office just a week ago, thousands of migrants have also been deported to Central and South America. However, in most cases, these deportations resulted from agreements established before his re-election.
