Sean 'Diddy' Combs is responding to what he describes as unfounded and harmful allegations by initiating a $50 million defamation lawsuit against Courtney Burgess and Nexstar, the parent company of NewsNation, as reported by Variety.
The artist asserts that Burgess has concocted sensational narratives regarding purported sex tapes involving him and various other celebrities, including claims that certain individuals were minors.
Combs contends that these allegations are not only untrue but also jeopardize his entitlement to a fair trial as he confronts federal charges related to sex trafficking and racketeering.
Diddy’s legal stand
Diddy's lawsuit, submitted in a federal court in New York, alleges that both Burgess and the media outlet have spread false information with a blatant disregard for the truth.
Erica Wolff, the attorney representing Combs, stated in a communication to Variety, “Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs is standing firm against the malicious fabrications that have been created and propagated by individuals aiming to exploit him.”
The lawsuit contends that these allegations have "tainted public perception" and threatened Combs’s entitlement to a fair trial. "This complaint should act as a cautionary note that such deliberate falsehoods, which compromise Mr. Combs’s right to a fair trial, will no longer be accepted."
Additionally, the lawsuit outlines how Burgess’s assertions reached federal prosecutors, resulting in a subpoena for him to provide testimony before a grand jury in New York. Outside the courthouse, Burgess reaffirmed his allegations, asserting that U.S. Marshals had conducted searches of his properties as part of their investigation.
Diddy's lawsuit against Burgess, Ariel Mitchell and NewNation
A central aspect of the lawsuit revolves around a statement made by Burgess's attorney, Ariel Mitchell, who asserted that she had evidence to substantiate the allegations, including police documentation. However, the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office promptly refuted this claim, stating that the allegations had been "thoroughly investigated" and deemed "unfounded," as reported by Hollywood Reporter.
In interviews with NewsNation, Burgess alleged that he had videos depicting Combs engaging in sexual assaults, including those involving minors. Combs contends that these unverified allegations, broadcast by the network, have significantly damaged his reputation and the ongoing legal proceedings.
The lawsuit articulates, “Since no such tapes exist, and since Mitchell has never viewed any video showing Mr. Combs sexually abusing anyone, whether adult or minor, Mitchell’s numerous false claims that Burgess had such videos were either willfully egregious falsehoods or recklessly inaccurate statements resulting from Mitchell’s unacceptable failure to investigate her client’s outrageous fabrications.”
