Two pivotal Decembers have significantly transformed the life of actor Saurabh Sachdeva. On December 1, 2023, he captured the audience's attention with his portrayal of Abid Haque in Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s film, Animal. This performance prompted viewers to revisit his earlier works, leading many to question why he had not received recognition sooner. “That’s one positive outcome from all of this,” Saurabh remarked in an interview with Hindustan Times.
The second December that altered his trajectory was marked by the release of Sukumar’s Pushpa 2: The Rule on December 4 of this year, which achieved remarkable success at the box office, grossing over ₹1000 crore worldwide. “This has resulted in more selfies, increased work opportunities, greater financial rewards, and heightened joy,” Saurabh chuckled, reflecting on the past year. He then discussed various topics, including his recent film, experiences in Tollywood, and his future projects.
‘My character shifts the plot in Pushpa 2’
There’s a key scene in Pushpa 2: The Rule when Saurabh’s character, a gangster called Hameed, is introduced into the story. “Honestly, it’s like the big bang in the story,” explains Saurabh, adding, “When they told me my character shifts the plot, I just knew I wanted to experience a new world, work with someone from a different industry. I admit, I also wanted to reach out to a whole new set of audience who might not have seen my work yet.”
The actor says working in the Telugu film industry was a ‘very warm’ and ‘friendly’ experience. “I got the same respect that everyone else did on set. Even better, the director allowed me to explore how I wanted to play the character; he trusted me. It was a very cosy atmosphere to work in, and it made me say yes to more work down south,” admits Saurabh, adding, “But, we shot a lot more scenes than what’s shown in the film. I guess they wanted to keep it tight.”
‘I wanted to see Allu Arjun’s caravan’
Saurabh's interactions in Pushpa 2: The Rule may depict a conflict between him and Pushpa, yet in reality, the two share a friendly rapport. "When I first met Allu Arjun, I expressed my desire to see his renowned custom-made caravan; it is truly impressive (laughs). After filming our scenes, we enjoyed time together in his caravan, and I must say, despite his celebrity status, he is remarkably kind and down-to-earth," the actor remarks.
The individual recounted the discussion he had with the duo, stating, “He expressed admiration for my performance in Pushpa 2, to which I conveyed my gratitude. We also engaged in a meaningful conversation regarding Animal, during which he shared his appreciation for the film and my character. Following our sincere exchange, I felt assured that I was exactly where I needed to be. I departed from the conversation feeling quite pleased.”
‘I want to work with young directors’
Saurabh has made a significant impact through his performances in acclaimed films and series such as Manmarziyaan, Sacred Games, Jaane Jaan, and Bad Cop. He also featured in the short film First Time, which garnered both the People’s Choice Award and the Jury Award at this year's Filmfare Awards. Saurabh is resolute about the type of projects he wishes to pursue.
"I have always sought to challenge myself and prefer to portray characters that contribute meaningfully to the narrative, regardless of the film's genre. Now that audiences have recognized my abilities and potential, I am eager to collaborate with innovative directors and producers who present original stories and allow me to explore diverse roles. Following my work in Animal and Pushpa 2, I am enthusiastic about taking on more projects," he articulates.
Saurabh has secured several upcoming projects in both Hindi cinema and the South Indian film industry, although he is unable to disclose details at this time. "People appreciate my work, which brings me joy, energizes me, and serves as a source of motivation. I previously directed a short film titled Gul (2016), and while I have an interest in direction, my current focus is entirely on acting," he concludes.
