Saqib Saleem Advocates for Equal Audition Standards: One Individual Holds Five Projects Without Auditions
1 month ago | 5 Views
Saqib Saleem has been active in the entertainment industry for nearly fifteen years. He has garnered acclaim from both audiences and critics for his performances in films such as Bombay Talkies, 83, and Rangbaaz. In his latest project, Crime Beat, he takes on the role of a journalist. Prior to the show's premiere, Saqib engaged in a conversation with HT regarding his character, the insights he gained about journalists through this role, and his openness to auditioning, even at this point in his career.
Saqib Saleem on Crime Beat
Saqib expresses that portraying a journalist has deepened his empathy for the profession. He remarks, "This experience has reinforced my belief that it is an incredibly challenging life. The notion of day and night or regular meals is virtually nonexistent. One is perpetually in pursuit of various objectives, and nothing comes easily."
The actor notes that his interactions with the media have evolved following the show, owing to his enhanced comprehension of journalists' roles. He elaborates, "Now, when I encounter someone seeking a story from me, I perceive them in a different light instead of outright dismissing them. They are also fulfilling their responsibilities. We should strive to find a common ground where I can share what I am comfortable with, allowing you to craft a narrative around it. This newfound understanding has certainly emerged."
Saqib Saleem on auditioning and hustling
Having been in the industry for an extended period, Saqib expresses that he continues to 'audition and hustle' for roles, a process he embraces. "Every role requires effort. Throughout my career, I have participated in approximately 15 to 16 films or shows. Whether through auditions or other means, I have actively sought every opportunity. Nothing has come to me without effort; I have had to go out and convince others of my capabilities," he states.
The actor acknowledges that in the early stages of his career, he felt offended by the need to audition, but he has since recognized the significance of this practice. He remarks, "I was not fond of it. Initially, I took it very personally, believing that having completed one or two films would automatically lead to more opportunities. But that was merely the arrogance of youth. Now, I believe that a skilled actor should not shy away from auditions. It is part of the profession. One cannot improve as an actor by remaining idle at home."
Nonetheless, Saqib does express a slight grievance regarding the audition process within the industry. He notes the lack of consistency in how auditions are conducted. "The standards should be uniform for everyone," he asserts, adding, "If I have been in this field for the past 15 years and reviews consistently praise my acting, yet there are individuals who have not received similar recognition but still secure five projects without auditioning, it feels unjust. However, I understand that the industry is not inherently fair. Do such situations frustrate me at times? Yes, they do. After all, I am human. Yet, I have come to terms with the necessity of my own efforts."
Saqib's upcoming project is a new series directed by Sudhir Mishra. This crime thriller, set in Delhi, features a cast that includes Saba Azad, Rahul Bhat, Sai Tamhankar, Danish Hussain, and Rajesh Tailang. The show is set to premiere on Zee5 on February 21.
