Sandeep Reddy Vanga Responds to Criticism Over Mother Roles: "In Real Life..."

Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, though having directed only three films—Arjun Reddy, Kabir Singh, and Animal—has already established a reputation for his unique filmmaking approach. He is cognizant of the critiques directed at him, particularly regarding the perceived lack of emphasis on maternal roles in his narratives. In a recent episode of Indian Idol 15, set to air on Sony at 9 pm, he addressed these concerns.

Sandeep Reddy Vanga addresses the criticism

Sandeep attributed his success to his family's unwavering support, sharing with a contestant, “The backing of my family has been instrumental. I once made a promise to my mother that I would become a director before I spent the 2 lakhs I earned while working at McDonald's and Subway in Sydney during my film studies.”

He recounted the expectations placed upon him to pursue a career in engineering or medicine. However, after not achieving the necessary grades for MBBS, he opted for physiotherapy, only to discover a lack of passion for the field. His interest in photography ultimately led him to enrol in a film school in Sydney, although it took him an additional 6-7 years to achieve his goal of becoming a director.

When Shreya Ghoshal inquired whether his choice to attend film school was solely his vision or if it was supported by his family, Sandeep clarified, “My family, particularly my mother, was incredibly supportive, assisting with the film school fees and the production of Arjun Reddy. I approached numerous producers with the concept, but when those efforts failed, we decided to produce it ourselves.”

He also responded to the criticism regarding the portrayal of mothers in his films, stating, “I have faced criticism for not giving sufficient importance to maternal roles, yet I have come to understand that in my personal life, I share a deep bond with my mother. However, since our relationship is devoid of complaints, there is no inherent drama or conflict that inspires me to write about it. Should I ever create a mother-son narrative, it will be characterized by positivity, devoid of darkness, and filled with good vibes.”

Upcoming work

Sandeep appeared on the program to commemorate the one-year anniversary of his previous film, Animal, featuring Ranbir Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor, and Bobby Deol in prominent roles. The film performed successfully at the box office, although it garnered mixed reviews, with some critics labelling it as misogynistic. Sandeep is set to collaborate with Prabhas on an upcoming police drama titled Spirit, which has not yet commenced production. There are also rumours that Don Lee may join the cast.
