Sandeep Reddy Vanga Highlights Disparity in Criticism for 'Animal'

In 2024, Sandeep Reddy Vanga's action-drama Animal became a huge hit, even though it got some heat for its violent and misogynistic themes. Recently, during a chat with Komal Nahata on his YouTube channel Game Changers, the director shared his thoughts on how folks in the film industry slammed the movie but still gave a thumbs up to Ranbir Kapoor. This made him wonder about the double standards in the industry.

Sandeep Reddy Vanga talks about the differences in Bollywood

When asked about the criticism directed at "Animal" from people in the film industry, Vanga said, "Let me tell you this—those who slammed 'Animal' all mentioned, ‘But Ranbir toh todd diya (Ranbir nailed it).’ I’m not jealous of Ranbir, but I just don’t get the double standards. It seems like they want to collaborate with him. Because if they say something negative about Ranbir... well, that’s a whole different ball game. It’s easy to take shots at me since I’m still new here. A filmmaker might release a movie every few years, but an actor is in multiple films each year. So, they won’t criticize those they work with more frequently."

When asked if he felt like an outsider in Bollywood, Vanga replied, "Not at all. I don’t buy into the whole insider vs. outsider thing. I’ve never felt like an outsider. Sure, there’s a clear group and some inequality. But it’s like when a new kid joins your school—you’ve been there since the beginning, and they come in later, so it’s natural to feel a bit of seniority."

He also shared a story about an actor from "Kabir Singh" who was turned down for work by a big production company just because of their association with that film. Vanga criticized this bias in the industry and dared them to say the same things to stars like Ranbir Kapoor, Triptii Dimri, and Rashmika Mandanna. He expressed his frustration, saying it left him feeling both annoyed and disheartened.

About Animal

The action-drama featuring Ranbir Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor, and Bobby Deol has drawn some heat for its violent scenes and supposed misogynistic themes. Notable figures like Javed Akhtar and Kangana Ranaut have publicly criticized the movie. Still, despite the negative feedback, Animal turned out to be a huge hit at the box office, raking in over ₹900 crore globally. The plot centers around Ranvijay Singh, the son of a wealthy industrialist, and explores his rocky relationship with his father, which spirals further into chaos as he seeks revenge after an assassination attempt on his dad.
