In light of the ongoing controversy and legal challenges associated with his program, India’s Got Latent, comedian Samay Raina has finally addressed the situation. He shared a statement on X (formerly Twitter) regarding the issues that arose following a crude joke made by Ranveer Allahbadia during his show.
Samay Raina’s statement
In his statement, Samay expressed that the recent developments have been overwhelming for him. He stated, “The current circumstances have become too much for me to bear. I have decided to remove all videos related to India’s Got Latent from my channel. My primary aim was to entertain and bring joy to people. I am committed to fully cooperating with all relevant agencies to ensure that their investigations are conducted fairly. Thank you.”
Balraj Singh Ghai, a frequent judge and producer of India's Got Latent, recently posted images on Instagram featuring himself, Samay, and other team members. Samay was in Seattle, USA, for a stand-up performance. The photos depicted him socializing with friends, engaging in a game of chess with Balraj, and receiving enthusiastic applause from the audience during his show.
Reactions from the Online Community
However, the online community expressed discontent, with one user commenting, “Make people laugh by this kind of content? Insane.. mumma papa hassle yeh content dekh ke??” Another user remarked, “Isme bhi kch fishy hi lag rha hai mujhe toh.” Additionally, a commenter noted, “You are yet to apologise. So long post but you didn't use the word 'sorry' 'regret' etc.” Another inquiry was, “Where’s the apology?”
Conversely, one supporter expressed, “Hoping things get resolved asap.” Another encouraging message stated, “Stay strong, spreading joy matters. Hoping for a fair resolution.”
Background of the Incident
During an episode of India’s Got Latent, Ranveer made a joke that was poorly received by the audience. This led to a formal complaint being lodged with the Mumbai Commissioner and the Maharashtra Women's Commission against Ranveer, Samay, Apoorva Mukhija, and the show's organizers. The complaint alleges the use of abusive language and inappropriate comments directed at women for the sake of popularity and financial gain.
In response to the backlash, Ranveer later issued an apology for his "inappropriate" comments, which he acknowledged were made in an "insensitive" manner during the YouTube episode. He shared a video apology on his X account, stating that "comedy is not his forte" and that "it wasn't cool."
