The ongoing controversy regarding comedian Samay Raina's roast of actor Kusha Kapila's divorce from Zorawar Ahluwalia remains a topic of discussion. Earlier this year, Kusha described the jokes as "dehumanising," which ignited a vigorous debate. Recently, Samay has shared insights into the repercussions of the incident, indicating that his relationship with Kusha has suffered as a result.

Samay Raina discloses

During a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) session, the comedian expressed that the moment when they can reflect on the incident with humor and progress remains a far-off prospect.

In the midst of the session, a participant inquired, “Who is your favourite comedian? How do you avoid controversies? What is the current state of your friendship with Kusha?”

Samay addressed the question directly, revealing his admiration for her.

He stated, “I do not have a favourite comedian; rather, I have favourite jokes. I appreciate and learn from numerous comics, and the list would be endless if I attempted to compile it. I do not pursue controversies; I simply remain true to myself, and somehow, situations arise. I am learning to navigate them gracefully. My friendship with Kusha has changed; we seldom communicate, but I recently spoke with her, and it was wonderful! I hold her in high regard. I hope that one day we can both laugh about everything openly, but that day is still some time away. I will always support her success.”

Concerning the roast

In an episode of the comedy series Pretty Good Roast Show S1, Kusha participated in a roasting session alongside fellow comedians. The atmosphere shifted dramatically when Samay launched a series of jokes aimed at Kusha's marriage and her recent divorce from Zorawar. These sharp comments ignited a significant controversy, leading many to question whether the humour had veered into the realm of insensitivity.

Kusha and Zorawar were married in 2017, and they announced their separation in June 2023. Samay initiated his roast by labelling Kusha a 'gold-digger' and proceeded to make jokes about her divorce, even referencing the pet dog that Kusha shares with her ex-husband.

"Kusha has a female dog, who is with Kusha half the time, and during the other half remains happy. Just give the dog to Zorawar. Let him have at least one b**ch in his life,” he remarked in Hindi. Additionally, some comedians commented on Kusha's recent weight loss.

Subsequently, Kusha took to social media to express her discontent regarding the "shockingly unkind" jokes made about her body and divorce. She stated, "When someone’s trying to disempower you, it’s their garbage. It’s not yours to store. Let it slide off you."

She further remarked, “I had no idea what was in store for me. Perhaps I should have requested a script to be better prepared, but since friends were involved, I didn’t. A rookie mistake.”

"While I endured some of the really harsh jokes in front of a live audience and technicians, I absolutely was not okay with it being broadcast to millions, as some jokes outright dehumanized me. It was shockingly unkind,” Kusha shared, adding, “Mine was the first episode to be filmed (in January), so everyone had a fair bit of learning post-shoot, which is why in subsequent episodes, boundaries have not been crossed, particularly concerning women.”
