Salman Khan on Hindi Films’ Struggles: "South Indian Fans Stick to Their Stars"
4 days ago | 5 Views
The phrase "pan-India" emerged in India's film industry following the remarkable success of Baahubali. It is used to describe films that possess the ability to appeal to audiences nationwide, transcending linguistic differences. Over the past decade since Baahubali's release, the term has predominantly been associated with South Indian films making inroads into the Hindi-speaking regions, rather than the reverse. Actor Salman Khan suggests that this trend is due to the limited market presence of Hindi films in the South, where audiences show little interest in viewing Bollywood productions in cinemas.
Salman Khan on Bollwood going pan-India
On Wednesday, during the promotion of his latest film, Sikandar, Salman Khan addressed the media at a hotel in Mumbai. He discussed the challenges Bollywood faces in gaining traction in the South Indian film market, stating, "When my film is released there, it will not achieve significant numbers due to the strong fan base they possess. I can walk down the street and hear 'Bhai, Bhai,' but that does not translate to ticket sales. The acceptance we have for their films here is not reciprocated there. Their movies succeed because we actively watch them, such as those featuring Rajinikanth, Chiranjeevi, Suriya, or Ram Charan. However, their fans do not reciprocate by watching our films."
When asked why Bollywood has not been casting South Indian stars in Hindi films to enhance their appeal in southern markets, Salman responded, "A suitable script is essential for such collaborations to occur." He acknowledged that the primary obstacle is financial constraints. "The issue is funding... Both sides have their fees. Producing a film of this nature carries significant responsibility, and a compelling script is necessary. For example, in a film like Ramayana, they can cast talent from both industries." Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana features Ranbir Kapoor alongside Kannada superstar Yash and Telugu actor Sai Pallavi in leading roles.
About Sikandar
Sikandar, the upcoming film featuring Salman Khan, also includes performances by Rashmika Mandanna, Kajal Aggarwal, Sathyaraj, and Sharman Joshi. The movie is set to premiere in theaters on May 30, aligning with the Eid celebrations.
Salman has encouraged audiences to visit theaters to enjoy Sikandar, along with other films being released this week. "I hope that those who are working receive generous bonuses for Eid, allowing them to see Sikandar, Mohanlal sir's L2: Empuraan, and Sunny Deol's latest film (Jaat). Three major stars are debuting with significant films, and I wish for all of them to succeed," he remarked.
