Salman Khan Initially Rejected Garv, Saying It Was a ‘Sunny Deol Style’ Film: “Why Come to Me?”

Salman Khan's portrayal of a police officer has always been a hit with fans. Before he made waves with blockbusters like Wanted and Dabangg, he explored this genre in Puneet Issar's Garv: Pride & Honour. Interestingly, this film wasn't his top pick, as Salman had doubts about his ability to take on the role, a fact Puneet shared in a recent interview.
Salman had some doubts about taking on the role of a police officer
Garv hit the screens in 2004, marking the first time Salman Khan portrayed a police officer, ACP Arjun Ranawat. In a chat with Digital Documentary, Puneet Issar shared how he managed to persuade Salman to take on this new role.
"Puneet mentioned, 'Salman and I have been friends for ages, and we've worked together for quite some time. I told him I was writing something new. When he heard the story of Garv, he really liked it, but he asked me, ‘Why are you coming to me with this?’ He felt it was more in line with Sunny Deol's style of films. Salman typically didn't do those kinds of movies.'"
I aimed to transform how people see Salman
Puneet expressed his enthusiasm for transforming Salman's public persona, which was primarily associated with romantic and comedic roles at that time.
"I told Salman, 'I want to change how people see you.' He was known as the charming lover boy, often in comedies. He had starred in hits like Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Biwi No 1, and Judwaa. He was already a massive star, but I felt it was time for him to shift his image. He liked the script and agreed to take on the project. I believe actors are like wild horses; only those who know how to handle them can ride them. Working with Salman was a joy. He fully embraced the character. I'm grateful to him for helping me become an A-list director. After that, he found great success in roles as a police officer in films like Wanted and Dabangg," Puneet shared.
All about Garv
Puneet Isaar directed Garv, which featured Shilpa Shetty, Arbaaz Khan, Amrish Puri, and Anupam Kher in key roles. While the film didn't make a big splash at the box office, critics praised Salman's performance.
