Salaar actor Pramod: ‘I’ve realized the importance of saying no…’

Picking a script is a really tricky business, actor Pramod was recently heard telling RJ Nethra on her show Star Express. Often, here may be a script or narration that sounds terrific, but the end product is bad, whereas a not too impressive script may turn out to be a good film with the making.

So, when Pramod is offered a role, he pays keen attention to how the character is explained and then analyses if he can see himself in the role. “If I think I can pull it off, then I take it up. In fact, I have okayed a couple of scripts like that and am currently working on those films, which makes me very happy,” explains Pramod.

Salaar actor Pramod: ‘I was very happy to take up Bhuvanam Gaganam because…’

The actor adds that he’s learnt from his mistakes, and admits that there were a couple of films in which he couldn’t picture himself in those roles and still went ahead and did them. The outcome, of course, was disastrous. Having said that, Pramod adds that being too picky about the films coming his way could result in there being no work for lengthy periods of time.

“Out of sight is out of mind in the film industry; you have to keep doing work at regular intervals. But that doesn’t mean one has to take up roles that do not seem right from the word go. I have realized that I need to learn to say no, when I am not convinced about a film/role. Earlier, I used to wonder if the film teams would feel bad if I reject their project, or if they would spread negativity about me. That doesn’t affect me anymore,” says the actor, adding that it’s taken him a while, but in the last couple of years, he has learnt to say no and stick by his decision.

Pramod reckons that it doesn’t make sense to take up a film and end up with bad vibes about it and the team eventually. “Either I tell them that I did not like it, or that I cannot see myself in the role. The script may be good, but doesn’t work for me. They may take offence in the moment, but that is better than being stuck with a project that you are not convinced about,” he says.

Pramod will next be seen in Bhuvanam Gaganam, opposite Rachel David. The film also stars Pruthvi Ambaar
