Actors immersing themselves in the movies they're working on is always fascinating to watch. When the actor possesses multiple talents, it becomes even more intriguing because their involvement extends beyond just what happens on screen; they often contribute to behind-the-scenes aspects as well. Ryan Gosling is one such artist—he can act, dance, sing, write, and exudes a charm that makes him almost universally forgivable. One of his films that showcases his exceptional performance, aside from La La Land, is Blue Valentine, where he stars alongside Michelle Williams. While their on-screen story is equal parts beautiful and haunting, did you know that the music for Blue Valentine was actually written, composed, and performed by Gosling himself?
Ryan Gosling's Dedication
Blue Valentine stars Ryan Gosling as Dean Pereira and Michelle Williams as Cynthia Heller. It tells the story of a couple and their journey through falling in love and eventually out of it. The film captures the full spectrum of their relationship—the good, the bad, the ugly, the toxic, and more. The exploration of their relationship was so compelling that audiences couldn’t help but be captivated by it. One of the film's most beloved aspects, besides the outstanding performances, was the music. But what might surprise you is that Ryan Gosling created all his own songs for the film. Read on to learn more about this fascinating detail.
Ryan Gosling, who was deeply immersed in the making of Blue Valentine, decided to write, perform, and compose his own songs for the film. The actor took charge of the music and delivered a phenomenal contribution. Not only did he perform in the movie, but he’s also credited in the film’s soundtrack for composing and playing the tracks Unicorn Tears and Smoking Gun Bleeding Knives. Imagine the stories this multi-talented man could tell!
The Intense Method Process of Blue Valentine
Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, as Dean and Cynthia, go through a full journey as a couple in the film. To bring out authentic emotions, director Derek Cianfrance wanted them to stay together in real life. He actually made them live in the house where they shot the movie for a month, along with the child actor who played their daughter.
"During the month, we tried to dismantle this thing that we had been building," Gosling told Fresh Air contributor Dave Davies. "[Originally,] we all worked really hard to create this love story portion, when they're falling in love. We wanted it to feel genuine and real and true. And we spent all of this time building it up, and then we had to tear it down."
Blue Valentine is streaming on Lionsgate Play in India, and you can watch it with your OTTplay Premium subscription. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more information on this and everything else from the world of streaming and films.
