Since rejoining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Robert Downey Jr. appears to be significantly involved in the development of his new character, Victor von Doom. As excitement mounts for the forthcoming installment of the Avengers series, directors Joe and Anthony Russo are providing insights into the preparatory work for their upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday.

Robert Downey Jr. is well-known for his portrayal of Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man, in more than six MCU films from 2008 to 2019. In this new saga, he will take on the role of the primary antagonist for the Avengers.

In a recent discussion with Deadline, Joe Russo emphasized Robert Downey Jr.'s remarkable dedication to his transformative role. "The process of developing the character is quite intense," Joe remarked, noting, "He is deeply immersed in it. He is incredibly focused." This profound commitment from Downey is recognized by his co-director, Anthony Russo, who stated, "That exemplifies the kind of artist he is. That reflects the kind of actor he is."

Joe Russo further detailed Downey's extensive involvement in crafting his character, indicating that the actor is actively participating in the development of a backstory and conceptualizing costume designs.

"I believe he has a passion for richly developed, three-dimensional characters, and he perceives a significant opportunity with this role," Joe commented, according to Deadline. The announcement of Robert Downey Jr.'s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom created a stir among fans when it was revealed at last year's Comic-Con.

This represents a notable departure from his legendary portrayal of Iron Man, a character he embodied for more than ten years. Audiences will have their first glimpse of Downey's Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for release on May 1, 2026, followed by the sequel Avengers: Secret Wars, set for May 2027.

Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell to return too

In addition to Robert Downey Jr.'s return, the Russo brothers have announced further thrilling cast additions for Avengers: Doomsday.

As reported by Deadline, Chris Evans, known for his portrayal of Captain America, is said to be making a comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a yet-to-be-revealed role, while Hayley Atwell will return as Agent Peggy Carter. The Russo brothers, who previously directed Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Captain America: Civil War, will once again take on directing responsibilities.
