In the realm of content creators, Ronit Ashra stands out as a prominent figure. He's gained fame for his celebrity impersonations, successfully mimicking stars like Alia Bhatt, Ananya Panday, and Shehnaaz Gill, among others. With over 200 posts to his name, each one has gone viral, earning him a lot of admiration on social media. Beyond his online presence, Ronit has also made his acting debut in the crime thriller web series, Swipe Crime, available on Amazon MX Player. In a recent chat with OTTplay, he shared insights about his journey as a content creator, how he keeps himself grounded despite his viral success, his proudest work, and hinted at the potential for a second season of Swipe Crime.

Highlights from Ronit Ashra's interview

We all know your mimicry of celebrities is a hit! What’s your approach when you choose which celebrity to imitate?

Absolutely, I have a routine. Before I create a video, I always look into what's trending, like popular audio and videos. Having been in the social media game for quite a while, I have a good grasp of what makes a meme. I start by making a base cut based on the trending memes, audio, and videos, and then I tweak it regularly. After that, I duplicate the base layer of the video, and by the third or fourth day, the style and design are all set.

What do you think about before you try to imitate a celebrity?

I always choose topics that I think will keep my audience entertained. By now, I have a good sense of what they enjoy in my content. I created a reel featuring just Urvashi Rautela talking, but recently I switched it up with a reel that includes multiple characters. I like to keep experimenting with different styles!

Has any celebrity slid into your DMs to ask about what you think of them?

Deepak Kalal, a social media star known for his entertaining videos, including one where he says, "Modiji, I’ll give you a hug," slid into my DMs asking me to imitate him. I replied, "Actually, I’ve already made a video about you." It wasn’t a full-on video, just a clip featuring him, but he really enjoyed it when I sent it over.

Not long ago, I attended the OTTplay Awards 2025, where Aparshakti Khurana mentioned that he’s a big fan of my videos. I also had a chat with Ayushmann Khurrana and Ananya Panday. Plus, Rakhi ma'am left a comment on one of my videos!

Who’s a celebrity or creator you’d love to team up with someday?

I’m super eager to meet Alia (Bhatt) ma'am! I created a video inspired by her role in Gangubai Kathiawadi, and it really motivated me to think, "Hey, I’m actually doing something worthwhile." After that, I started enjoying the process of making videos a lot more. She’s a huge inspiration for me, and I’ve watched tons of her films—I really admire her.

The video I’m most proud of is definitely the Gangubai one; it holds a special place for me. Besides that, I’ve had several viral reels, including one about the Ambani family that hit over 160 million views, which I’m really proud of too!

When you're not busy making content, what aspects of Ronit Ashra do we typically miss out on online?

I often look for some peace when I'm not busy making content. I enjoy going out for dinner with friends, and as a college student, I have a lot on my plate. While people are aware that I act, no one has actually seen me perform the character I portray in college.

Did you dream of being a content creator when you were a kid?

When I first began my journey, I aimed to be an actor. Back in school, we were all a bit lost about our futures, so around 10th or 11th grade, I jumped into content creation since everyone else was doing it too. Initially, I planned to attend a fashion college because I have a knack for art and crafts. However, I soon realized that I needed to head to Mumbai, the epicenter for content creation. It dawned on me that acting was the natural progression for me. While I didn’t have a specific goal for content creation at the start, my passion for it never faded and became an integral part of who I am.

What’s your secret to staying down-to-earth when you’re suddenly famous?

My friends help keep me grounded.

As a content creator, how do you feel about the art style that's inspired by Studio Ghibli these days?

I’m not really on board with that idea. I feel like I’m part of a community of traditional artists who create by hand. Those artists pour their emotions into their drawings, and as an artist myself, I just can’t get behind it.

What do you think are the ways AI could negatively impact content creators?

For the time being, computers can't truly replicate human creativity since everything they produce is just a copy. I think this isn't a big issue right now because we're generating a lot of content, adding our unique spins, and sharing it. However, I've noticed that there are AI-generated content creators that aren't real people, which could mislead others—this is the only concerning aspect of AI at the moment.

Ronit has kicked off his acting career with Swipe Crime on Amazon MX Player. In an exclusive interview, we asked him about the possibility of a Season 2 and how his experience on set was.

What was it like working at Swipe Crime?

Since I was a kid, I've dreamed of being an actor. I finally got my chance to act in the series Swipe Crime. This was my first time working on such a big project; I had only been involved in smaller productions before. When I arrived on set and saw the professional actors in action, it was a bit overwhelming, but I gave it my all. I had a blast during the experience, and after Swipe Crime, I realized I wanted to do more work in front of the camera.

Is there any chance we might see a second season of Swipe Crime?

Ronit grinned and mentioned, "Absolutely! There's a chance for season 2. I can't give away too much, but it's definitely in the works."

Any tips for up-and-coming creators?

For young creators, my tip is to remember that content creation is a marathon, not a sprint. Focus on making content that truly inspires you, since it’s a lengthy journey. Enjoy the process and infuse your work with your own unique flair—this is what can help it go viral!
