Social media is heated up with the allegation of maligning West Bengal in the film The Diary of West Bengal. Bengal’s ruling party’s spokesperson Kunal Ghosh attacked the celebrities on Friday on X-handle by asking why they kept mum. He questioned the silence of the stars close to the party. Several celebrities expressed their opinions regarding this. Now, Ritwick Chakraborty’s post on the issue goes viral.
Without naming anyone, Ritwick wrote in his Facebook post, “Shunecho to babu bole diyeche! Shudhu pashe dnariye chhobi tule gurutwo bario na. Dorkare chotujuto mathaye tule pahara dao. Choto kore bolle, Shunecho Ki Bole Gelo Bodhheen Skondho, Tomader gaye shudhu dhandar gondho. (Did you hear what the master said? Don’t just clock photos to tune up your social currency. If needed, rest their sandals and shoes on your head and guard them. In other words, the mindless head said that you reek of opportunism.”
Ritwick’s post created havoc on social media. According to industry experts, his post clearly came in response to Kunal’s post. Many suggested that the actor took a direct dig at the other celebrities who stand by the ruling party in their political agenda and benefit from the government.
Kunal regretted in his post that many directors, producers, and actors from Mumbai make political films helpful for making narratives for the BJP, and now malign West Bengal. But, he said, Tollywood celebrities who stand beside Mamata Banerjee on the stage and in the photo frames, only think about professional courtesy and building their images, and don't think about making Didi's biopic or films that can send a message to the TMC.
Many people think that Ritwick teased Kunal and some others think that he wanted to make his friends from the fraternity conscious. Ritwick always openly criticizes the state and the central governments on many issues and has been vocal about the RG Kar incident. However, actor and the TMC's MLA Soham Chakraborty, who was Ritwick's co-star in the film Dharmajuddha, supported Kunal Ghosh and said that The Diary of West Bengal is nothing but an effort to malign Bengal.
The film is directed by Sanoj Mishra. Its trailer was released in May 2023 and sparked controversy. The state police sent a legal notice to the director alleging that the film defamed West Bengal. However, the film was released on Friday, but there was no show in West Bengal. The audience does not have much interest in the film, but the controversy goes on.
