Prithviraj Sukumaran, the actor and director, premiered his third directorial venture, L2 Empuraan, featuring Mohanlal, in theaters this Thursday. Prior to the film's release, he unveiled all the characters from the Lucifer universe, but one enigmatic poster sparked curiosity. Introducing Rick Yune – an American actor, martial arts specialist, Bond villain, and the newly introduced antagonist who is poised to play a significant role in L3 The Beginning.

Who is Rick Yune?

Born in 1971 in Washington, DC, Rick is an American actor of Korean heritage. He holds a finance degree from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and interned on Wall Street in the early 1990s. However, his career took a turn when a modeling agent discovered him, making him the first Asian-American to feature in advertising campaigns for Versace and Ralph Lauren's Polo. In addition to practicing various martial arts, he is particularly skilled in Taekwondo and boxing.

Rick made his film debut in 1999 with Snow Falling on Cedars, portraying a Japanese-American war hero accused of murdering a respected fisherman. His performances as Johnny Tran, a Vietnamese gang leader in the 2001 film The Fast and The Furious, and as Zao, a North Korean terrorist in the 2002 James Bond film Die Another Day, brought him significant recognition. Since then, he has appeared in films such as Ninja Assassin and Olympus Has Fallen, as well as television series like Marco Polo and Prison Break.

His brother, Karl Yune, is also an actor known for his role in Memoirs of a Geisha. Additionally, Rick serves on the board of the Center for Global Dialogue and Cooperation, a non-governmental organization advocating for ethical practices in business and politics.

About L2 Empuraan and L3 The Beginning

L2 Empuraan is the sequel to Prithviraj’s 2019 Malayalam hit Lucifer, which introduced Mohanlal as the mysterious Stephen Nedumpally, aka Khureshi Ab’raam. Empuraan takes the story forward and brings back Manju Warrier and Tovino Thomas’ characters, Priyadarshini and Jathin Ramdas.

The film ends by setting the stage for the final part in the trilogy, L3 The Beginning. It also introduces Rick’s character as the leader of the Shenlong ‘Shen’ Triad, a powerful Indo-Chinese criminal syndicate. L2 Empuraan hints Rick might have a bigger role to play in L3 The Beginning.
