Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal have taken on the role of producers with their latest film, Girls Will Be Girls. Following its successful reception at Sundance and various international film festivals, the film was made available to a broader audience on Amazon Prime Video last week. In an interview with Hindustan Times, the actor-producers shared insights into the efforts required to bring the project to fruition.
Individuals seek a return on their investments
Girls Will Be Girls marks the directorial debut of Shuchi Talati and tells the story of a schoolgirl who struggles to balance her academic responsibilities with her first romantic relationship, all while managing a complex relationship with her mother. Reflecting on the challenges of securing financial backing for the film, Ali Fazal notes, "As we sought funding for the project, we approached various individuals and quickly realized that the primary concern for many was the potential for financial return. It is viewed as an investment. In contrast to major films featuring A-list stars, where returns are more predictable, the outcome of this film remains uncertain."
Despite these challenges, the actor-turned-producer expresses satisfaction with his decision to remain committed to the project. "As we navigated our entry into the realm of world cinema, we encountered typical initial hurdles. Nevertheless, I am pleased that we were able to support a script of this nature."
Bollywood exists primarily in the realm of imagination
Upon the release of the film's initial trailer on YouTube, numerous observers noted that 'mainstream Bollywood' would likely avoid a topic of this nature. Richa commented, "I believe Bollywood is fundamentally imaginative. A handful of families residing between Bandra and Goregaon consider themselves part of Bollywood. However, it is not a tangible geographical area. It represents the Hindi film industry, which is continuously changing and evolving, incorporating new talents."
She contends that the prominent presence of the film on a major streaming platform like Amazon Prime Video signifies a shift in the industry. "In a sense, a significant platform embracing a film of this nature indicates that progress is being made. Naturally, our association with it also plays a role," Richa adds.
Girls Will Be Girls features performances by Preeti Panigrahi, Kani Kusruti, and Kesav Binoy Kiron.
