The suicide of actor Sushant Singh Rajput reverberated throughout the film industry. Following his tragic passing, his former girlfriend, Rhea Chakraborty, along with her brother Showik, faced allegations of involvement in his death. Nevertheless, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has recently exonerated Rhea and her brother in its final report. In a recent interview with the Indian Express, Nidhi Hiranandani, a friend of the late actor, reflected on the hardships faced by Rhea's family, emphasizing that "the damage cannot be reversed."

Nidhi describes Rhea's family's ordeal after her arrest in Sushant's case

Nidhi characterized the relationship between Sushant and Rhea as beautiful and deeply affectionate. She reminisced about the time when Rhea was initially called to testify in the case, noting that she maintained regular communication with her throughout that challenging period. Nidhi emphasized that Rhea and her family barely had a chance to come to terms with the loss of their loved one. Overcome by shock and sorrow, they were thrust into a survival mode that left them with minimal opportunity to grieve appropriately.

Nidhi also recounted Rhea’s first experience with media scrutiny, detailing how she returned home with visible bruises on her arms and face after being overwhelmed by a crowd of journalists. As she watched the events unfold on television, Nidhi felt powerless alongside Rhea’s mother, observing the profound effects on their family.

Nidhi says Rhea was made a scapegoat

She remarked that initially, there was significant skepticism surrounding the situation. It was difficult for them to comprehend the source of all that was happening. As they were still grappling with the events that had unfolded, she vividly remembers how devastated Rhea Chakraborty and Showik appeared. Indrajit and Sandhya regarded Sushant as part of their family, and he reciprocated that sentiment. She witnessed their emotional breakdowns, noting that their mental well-being was already compromised. The challenges Rhea faced were unprecedented, leaving her feeling utterly powerless as she observed their lives being torn apart. The family aimed to handle the situation with dignity and sought an end to the turmoil. They pleaded with others to speak on their behalf, but their requests went unheeded. A tide of animosity surged, with many choosing to ride that wave rather than seek the truth, directing their disdain towards Rhea, who became a scapegoat in the process.

She also reflected on how Rhea's parents were profoundly affected after her arrest, describing them as "shattered and breaking down." She noted that Rhea’s mother lost her ability to speak, standing for hours in the temple with her hands clasped in prayer, fervently seeking protection.

Nidhi says Showick missed out on his studies

Nidhi addressed the repercussions on Showik, stating, “At just 23, Showik was preparing for his CAT exams and had secured admission to some of the most esteemed colleges, yet he was unable to attend. Rhea's career also suffered significantly; she was unable to pursue any film projects. They both lost so much. Showik faced rejection from many colleges due to the ongoing case. He transitioned from a boy to a man who now aspires to establish his life and provide stability for his family. He has lost his youth and carefree days. Both Rhea and Showik were forced to mature overnight.”

She concluded by noting that while the incident did not crush Rhea's spirit, it has left her as a “shattered person.” She emphasized the overwhelming fear they experienced and remarked that it would take a lifetime to repair the damage caused by the jail sentence.

About Sushant Singh Rajput's case

For those who may not be aware of the situation, Sushant was discovered deceased in his residence in Mumbai on June 14, 2020. Following this, his father filed a complaint against Rhea, accusing her of aiding in his suicide. Both she and her brother were subsequently interrogated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) regarding a money laundering investigation. After the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) assumed control of the case, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) apprehended Rhea and Showik, claiming they had provided marijuana to Sushant. Nevertheless, the court dismissed the NCB's assertions, leading to their release on bail. Five years later, on March 23, the CBI officially exonerated both individuals of any connection to Sushant's death.
