Actor Renuka Shahane brought both laughter and tears to audiences with her portrayal of the ‘perfect girl next door’ Pooja in the hit film Hum Aapke Hain Koun back in 1994. Recently, she opened up about how she faced stereotyping because of that role.

Renuka Shahane reflects on the past

Renuka opened up in an interview with Filme Shilmy, saying she never felt trapped by her role. Still, she mentioned that many casting directors and filmmakers had a hard time picturing her in parts that went beyond that.

She explained, “People in casting could never see me playing anything with darker shades or anything unkind. So, it felt pretty limiting because, as an actor, I want to explore all kinds of characters. The impact of that role was so significant that the roles I got on TV were mostly relatable girls who fit into the Indian value system. The opportunities I received didn’t really go beyond that. Honestly, though, I didn’t mind being typecast.”

Reflecting on her experience with Hum Aapke Hain Koun, she noted that everyone was serious and emotional when they saw her photo. Renuka shared, “Everyone was there, and they were super serious. I went to the set to check out the shoot, and I was just smiling, watching everyone get emotional. When they noticed me, they thought, ‘She’s here laughing at us.’ They told me to leave the set because they were trying to focus on their work.”

She also mentioned that her late co-star Reema Lagoo, who played her mother, was really upset during the hospital scene where her character dies. Hum Aapke Hain Koun, directed by Sooraj Barjatya, featured Madhuri Dixit and Salman Khan in the lead roles.
