David Lynch, the esteemed writer and filmmaker known for his iconic works such as Mulholland Drive and Twin Peaks, has passed away at the age of 78. His family shared the news of his death on his Facebook page.

The announcement states, “With profound sorrow, we, his family, inform you of the loss of both the man and the artist, David Lynch. We kindly request privacy during this difficult time. His absence has created a significant void in the world. However, as he often reminded us, ‘Keep your eye on the doughnut and not on the hole.’”

The post further expresses, “It is a beautiful day filled with golden sunshine and clear blue skies.”

David Lynch was battling emphysema

David Lynch garnered three Academy Award nominations for Best Director during his illustrious career, recognized for his exceptional work on Blue Velvet, The Elephant Man, and Mulholland Drive. His most recent significant project was Twin Peaks: The Return, which aired in 2017.

In August of the previous year, Lynch disclosed that he was facing a battle with emphysema, a chronic lung condition attributed to "many years of smoking." Nevertheless, he reportedly stated that despite his diagnosis, he remained in "excellent shape" and had no intention of retiring. In recognition of his contributions to cinema, Lynch was awarded an Honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement in 2000.

According to sources cited by Deadline, Lynch was compelled to evacuate his residence due to the Sunset Fire. In an interview with Sight & Sound magazine last year, he expressed that concerns over Covid and his emphysema diagnosis prevented him from leaving his home, indicating that any future directorial endeavours would likely be conducted remotely.

Lynch began his artistic journey by creating short films in the late 1960s, with his first feature film being Eraserhead, released in 1977. This project paved the way for his breakthrough with The Elephant Man. He portrayed John Ford in Steven Spielberg’s 2023 film, The Fabelmans. Following a series of successful projects throughout his career, he collaborated with his longtime associate Chrystabell on a new album titled Cellophane Memories last year.

Lynch was married four times and is survived by four children.
