Regena Cassandra on Vidaamuyarchi: ‘Not a Mindless Action Flick!’

Regena Cassandra returns to the realm of mass entertainment after a significant hiatus. The actress has made her mark in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi cinema, initially embarking on her Telugu journey with light-hearted films. However, in recent years, Regina has gravitated towards more complex roles. With her latest release, Vidaamuyarchi, she expresses her intention to strike a balance between both genres. In an exclusive interview, Regena discusses the film featuring Ajith and the transformative impact of OTT platforms on Indian cinema.

On Vidaamuyarchi

Regarding Vidaamuyarchi, Regena remarks, "This is not your typical commercial film." She elaborates, "While it has mass appeal, there is a distinctive tone that resonates with a broader audience. It is not merely a film where one can 'leave their brains at home and just enjoy.' Certainly, there is enjoyment to be had, but the film offers much more depth."

The film also signifies Ajith's return to the silver screen after a two-year absence. "It has been some time since audiences have seen him. The convergence of various elements, including Ajith sir, Trisha, and the entire production team, played a significant role in my decision to participate in this project," Regena explains.

On the changes in commercial cinema

The actor notes that the transition back to commercial cinema required time due to the evolution of the genre over the years. "I am consistently in pursuit of quality roles, regardless of the types of projects I am involved in or considering. However, if one examines my career in Telugu cinema, it has predominantly featured commercial films from the outset. Presently, the structure of commercial films has also transformed. There is significantly more action and violence, and the portrayal of women has shifted away from creating a calming influence," Regena elaborates.

Regena observes that a notable shift in commercial cinema is the rise of supporting characters who have emerged from the background. "What we are witnessing is a return to our earlier practices, where we focus on storytelling and character development before incorporating commercial elements. I believe this change is influenced by the filmmakers. While it does not apply to all films, there is a noticeable trend in that direction," she states. The actor attributes this transformation to the growth of OTT platforms in the country.

Vidaamuyarchi features Ajith, Trisha Krishnan, and Arjun Sarja alongside Regena. Directed by Magizh Thirumeni, the film received favourable reviews but has experienced moderate success at the box office. Since its release on February 6, Vidaamuyarchi has generated just over ₹100 crore in revenue.
