During an open discussion with her You’re Cordially Invited co-star Will Ferrell, Witherspoon revealed that she continues to feel 'haunted' by the incident. The Legally Blonde actress detailed how she was invited to present an award to a prominent actress, whom she was not very familiar with, at a notable event.

A friend of mine, whom I did not know very well but who was a serious and accomplished actress, requested that I present her with an award. Having never attended this particular award ceremony before, I mistakenly assumed it would be akin to a roast. Consequently, I took the stage and delivered a humorous speech, the actress recounted to People.

Witherspoon, under the impression that the event would be light-hearted and comedic, prepared a speech filled with humour, reminiscent of a roast. She began by reminiscing about amusing experiences, such as a shared incident involving laser hair removal, but soon realized that she had misinterpreted the gala's atmosphere. As Witherspoon noted, the event was “British and elegant and classy,” quite different from the informal setting she had anticipated.

Witherspoon perceived the incident as amusing; however, her attempt at humour was not well-received by the actress involved. The consequences were evident: Witherspoon admitted, “We’re not friends anymore.” Although she initially found the speech entertaining, she recognized that it was ill-suited for the audience, describing it as “pretty bad.” The actress, whose name she chose not to disclose, ceased all communication with her following the incident.

“We're not friends anymore. I’m serious — we’re not friends anymore,” she stated. “I believe she no longer has any fondness for me. I thought it was hilarious, but I misjudged the audience. It was quite unfortunate. Indeed, she doesn’t speak to me anymore. Oh well.”

During a Zoom interview with PTI, Ferrell recounted his experience at a hotel hosting a multi-day Indian wedding, chuckling as he described how guests casually encouraged him to participate, stating, “It was like an open invite. I should have taken them up on the offer... it looks like a lot of fun.”

You're Cordially Invited debuted on Prime Video and revolves around two weddings inadvertently scheduled at the same small island hotel on the same day. Witherspoon portrays Margot, a reality television executive planning her sister’s wedding, while Ferrell takes on the role of Jim, a widowed father preparing for his daughter’s significant day.
