Ravichandran: Audiences Prioritize Quality Over Star Power in Cinema

During the 25-day celebration of the film Bhuvanam Gaganam, Crazy Star V Ravichandran from Kannada cinema asked the crowd how many Kannada films they had watched since the year began. With many admitting they hadn’t seen more than 10, despite there being around 70-80 films released in theaters in just the first three months, he pointed out that it was unfair to blame the audience for not supporting Kannada cinema.

V Ravichandran: Viewers aren't tied to specific actors; they just want to enjoy good movies

Ravichandran decided to attend the event because he wanted to see some cheerful faces, especially since the Kannada film industry isn't exactly thriving right now. He emphasized the common belief that audiences back good movies and pointed out that films like Bhuvanam Gaganam prove this point. “When a film is well-made, people will show up at the theaters. They’re not fixated on a specific actor; they just want quality content. My film Premaloka is a prime example of this. We kept promoting it until it hit the 100-day mark, and that’s when it really took off and became a huge success,” he shared.

According to Ravichandran, the current issue is that filmmakers are causing a “traffic jam” at the box office. “If we keep releasing 10 films every week, how can we expect audiences to support 40 films in a month?” he questioned. He also mentioned that the idea of people flocking to watch films in other languages doesn’t really hold up, as only a few hits from those industries make it to Karnataka. If all those films were available here, the situation would be even worse, he added.

People have started to notice that films from languages like Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu are performing well at the box office in Karnataka, while Kannada movies struggle to attract audiences. This is mainly because only the 'better' films from those languages are released here.
