Kannada actress Ranya Rao is said to be experiencing significant remorse following her alleged involvement in gold smuggling into the country. She was apprehended at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru last week with 14.2 kg of gold valued at ₹12.56 crore. Recent reports indicate that she is undergoing mental distress as the investigation into her case continues.
Emotional Ranya Rao talks about mental trauma in court
Ranya has been placed in the custody of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) until March 10. According to a report by the Indian Express, when she appeared in court on Friday, she exhibited significant dark circles under her eyes, with images of her condition circulating online. She became emotional while confiding in her attorneys within the courtroom.
Through tears, Ranya expressed to her lawyers, “I constantly reflect on why I became involved in this. My thoughts revert to the day at the airport. I am unable to sleep... I am experiencing mental distress.”
Ranya, recognized for her performances in Kannada films such as Maanikya and Pataki, was apprehended earlier this week by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) upon her return from Dubai on March 3, in connection with an alleged gold smuggling operation.
Authorities assert that Ranya was in possession of 14.8 kilograms of gold, which she allegedly intended to smuggle into India.
On March 4, Ranya Rao was presented before a special court addressing financial crimes and was subsequently remanded to judicial custody until March 18. Before her transfer to custody, she underwent a medical evaluation at Bowring Hospital in Bengaluru.
During the interrogation, Rao maintained that her trip to Dubai was for business reasons. However, officials suspect that her visit was associated with the illicit importation of gold.
What happened to Ranya Rao's eyes?
Shortly after the Kannada actress was detained at Bengaluru International Airport, a photograph depicting her with swollen eyes and bruises began to circulate on social media, prompting speculation regarding the possibility of her having been assaulted during or following her arrest.
Nagalakshmi Chaudhary, Chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Women, addressed the viral image in a statement to ANI on Friday, indicating that the commission is unable to initiate an investigation without a formal complaint being lodged.
"Someone must file a complaint with us. The Women's Commission does not possess the authority to conduct an investigation," she remarked.
Chaudhary condemned any form of violence against Ranya, asserting, "Whoever perpetrated the assault should not have acted in such a manner. It is imperative that no one takes the law into their own hands. We must allow for an investigation, and the legal system will proceed accordingly. No individual has the right to inflict harm on another, regardless of gender, and I stand firmly against such actions."
She further noted that should Ranya choose to file a complaint, the commission would respond appropriately. "Unless she submits a request to the commissioner or sends a letter to me asking for our intervention, we will reach out to the relevant authorities to assist her, ensure a thorough investigation, and provide a report. That is the extent of the commission's capabilities. As she has not made a request or filed a complaint, I cannot provide further comments," she explained.
Ranya remains in the custody of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) until March 10.
