Ranveer vs. Kanan: Internet Debates Changing Comedy Standards

2 months ago | 5 Views

YouTuber and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia recently became the center of controversy following his remarks during a guest appearance on India's Got Latent. In the wake of this incident, an old clip featuring comedian and YouTuber Kanan Gill has resurfaced, in which he made a similar comment back in 2015.

When Kanan Gill made same joke as Ranveer Allahbadia

The brief clip was shared on Instagram by the account cin_a_mates1. The video is believed to be from 2015, when Jackky Bhagnani and Lauren Gottlieb were promoting their film, Welcome to Karachi, on Kanan's show. However, this information has not been independently verified by HT.

In the clip, Kanan posed the question, "Would you rather watch your parents have sex every day for the rest of your life or join in once to stop it?" This elicited laughter from both Jackky and Lauren, concluding with Kanan insisting, "You have to answer it, guys."

Ranveer Allahbadia made a similar joke during a recent episode of India's Got Latent, which resulted in significant backlash and even police complaints citing obscenity. Following the criticism, Samay Raina, the host of the show, removed all episodes from YouTube.

What internet has to say about this

In response to the resurfaced video, one individual remarked, "Well, the 2015 version of us was more relaxed than the 2025 version." Another comment noted, "The internet was not as trivial back then, and those who had access to it were more focused on meaningful content." An Instagram user commented, "The audience was not as sensitive back then." Another observer pointed out, "Nobody was aware of this show in 2015, while Samay Raina’s show has gained popularity among teenagers and those in their twenties."

A supporter stated, "I believe they are overreacting… @ranveerallahbadia has already issued an apology, and the episodes have been taken down—what more is needed?" A social media user expressed curiosity, asking, "Now I want to know, who is the original creator of this question?"

About Ranveer Allahbadia's controversy

On Friday, Ranveer petitioned the Supreme Court to consolidate several FIRs filed against him throughout India due to his recent inappropriate remarks. These comments were made during an appearance on the YouTube program hosted by comedian Samay Raina. In a subsequent apology video posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Ranveer acknowledged that his remarks were not only inappropriate but also lacked humor.
