Randeep Hooda is not one to shy away from expressing his thoughts candidly. In his recent interviews, the actor has shared his experiences with remarkable transparency, steering clear of conventional diplomatic replies. While promoting his forthcoming film Jaat, Randeep has discussed various facets of his career, including the lack of industry support during his Hollywood venture, Extraction, and his marginalization during the promotional activities for Highway, despite his significant role. He has also disclosed the reasons behind his decision to decline the role in Rang De Basanti, revealing an intriguing backstory.

The Missed Opportunity: Rang De Basanti

For those who may not know, Randeep Hooda was originally offered the role of Bhagat Singh in Rang De Basanti, a crucial character that ultimately went to Siddharth. This role was second in importance only to Aamir Khan’s. Although Randeep impressed director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra during the audition, he chose to decline the offer. The reason? Ram Gopal Varma had presented him with the lead role in his film D, and Hooda did not wish to be perceived as "standing behind Aamir Khan on the poster" of Rang De Basanti. In a conversation with Shubhankar Pandey, the star of Swatantrya Veer Savarkar remarked, “Had I accepted the role in Rang De Basanti, I would have entered a different realm of success. I auditioned and felt positive about it. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra would sometimes come to me, even after drinking, urging me, ‘Go for it, make the film.’ I advised him to drive safely.”

He elaborated, “I was interested in that film, but at that moment, Ram Gopal Varma told me, ‘I’m considering you for the lead role in D, and you want to be positioned behind Aamir on a poster?’ My Jaat pride surfaced, and I responded, ‘I refuse to stand behind Aamir.’ That incident occurred… and I also departed from Rock On for similar reasons.”

A Journey of Unconventional Choices  

Randeep further contemplated his preference for niche films rather than mainstream, career-defining opportunities: “I have consistently collaborated with various filmmakers and producers rather than those entrenched in the industry. Perhaps that is why my progress has been gradual. I used to believe that my talent alone was sufficient and that skill was paramount. However, that is not entirely accurate.”

Despite his unconventional choices, Randeep Hooda remains one of the most intense and respected performers in the industry today.
