Bollywood is presently facing a challenging period at the box office, with only two films achieving success this year. In a discussion with the Indian Express, actor Randeep Hooda expressed his views on the difficulties plaguing Hindi cinema, criticizing the industry's inclination to uncritically adopt trends. He also commended South Indian filmmakers for their commitment to preserving their cultural heritage.

Randeep Hooda on crisis in Hindi cinema

Randeep criticized the herd mentality prevalent in Bollywood, remarking, “This is merely a trend on social media. A couple of re-released films may have performed well, but that does not imply that everything is thriving. When one project succeeds, similar ones begin to emerge. Everyone wants to replicate that success. Following the success of Stree, there is a surge in the desire to produce horror comedies. As an actor, I believe this should not be the standard. The industry is currently grappling with a crisis due to various factors. We are witnessing a surge in film execution rather than true filmmaking. It seems we have somewhat isolated ourselves in an ivory tower, leaving little space for innovation.”

He went on to state that opportunities for experimentation in storytelling are now largely found on OTT platforms. Nevertheless, he recognized that these platforms also tend to focus on content that appeals to a broader audience and enhances subscription rates, thus operating within a business-oriented framework. Randeep aspires to find a balance between mainstream and experimental works, selecting themes that resonate with viewers.

Randeep Hooda praises South filmmakers

Randeep commended South Indian filmmakers for their emphasis on core human emotions in storytelling, which enhances the relatability of their films. He remarked, “They create films that resonate deeply, characterized by authenticity and well-developed personas. For instance, Pushpa is not defined by six-pack abs; he has a beard and a crooked shoulder. In contrast, many so-called elite filmmakers and actors focus on physical appearances rather than character development. They are not producing character-driven narratives. However, audiences will continue to engage with movies and OTT content; this is merely a transitional phase.”
