Nitesh Tiwari's adaptation of Ramayana is being promoted as the most costly Indian film ever produced. While the specifics of its budget remain largely unverified, the production team is committed to creating a visually stunning experience. Namit Malhotra, the head of the VFX studio DNEG, has joined the project as one of its producers. In an interview, he outlines his aspirations for how this film could transform the Indian filmmaking landscape.
On Ramayana's international potential
Regarding the international prospects of Ramayana, Namit, who has garnered seven Oscars for Best Visual Effects for groundbreaking films such as Interstellar and Dune, was asked if Ramayana could achieve a similar milestone for Indian cinema, akin to the success of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. He affirmed, "I firmly believe it has that potential. Ultimately, it is up to us to present it to the world, and with that comes a significant responsibility."
Previous adaptations of Ramayana have appeared in cinemas, with the latest, Adipurush, receiving negative reviews and failing at the box office. Namit emphasizes that his team recognizes the importance of narrating the story with care. "That is why we are approaching this project with great caution and sensitivity. This is a unique opportunity that may not arise again, and it is a pivotal moment for India."
Taking Indian storytelling globally
Namit expresses that the initiative surrounding Ramayana aims to promote Indian storytelling on a global scale. "I am eager not only to instill pride in India but also to captivate the world with Indian narratives and to collectively honor global cinema. It is not that we disregard Hollywood films; we appreciate works like Oppenheimer and Forest Gump, which evoke strong emotions, as well as other iconic films. Their narratives resonate universally. I am confident that this story holds the same potential. I consider myself fortunate to have this opportunity in my life, and I aspire to fulfill it," he remarks.
The film Ramayana, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, features Ranbir Kapoor in the role of Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, and Yash as Ravana. The cast also includes Ravi Dubey, Lara Dutta, Sheeba Chaddha, and Arun Govil. The film is set to be released in two parts in 2026 and 2027.
