Ram Gopal Varma hopped on X (formerly Twitter) to drop his thoughts, not on Sukumar’s Pushpa 2: The Rule, but on Allu Arjun’s character, Pushpa Raj. The director had nothing but good things to say about the actor's performance and how the character was crafted by the director. Here’s what he had to say.
Ram Gopal Varma shares his thoughts on Pushpa Raj.
RGV kicked off his thoughts with, “My take on Pushpa’s character in #pushpa2,” noting how rare it is in Indian cinema to come across such well-defined characters like Pushpa or to see a star willing to shed their own image to truly embody a role.
He went on to express that while watching the film, he felt Pushpa could genuinely exist in real life. “Encountering a character like Pushpa is one of those rare moments where I, as a viewer, found myself believing that someone like him could actually be out there. That’s no small feat, especially since the character is set against a backdrop of mainstream commercial cinema, which usually bends reality.”
RGV also pointed out that Pushpa showcases a mix of traits, combining innocence with shrewdness and a strong ego with vulnerability. He remarked, “I never thought a character with a deformity could be a true action hero, since superheroes are typically seen as flawless. But Allu Arjun transformed that deformity into a powerful asset, creating a unique body language and gestures that will stick in the audience's minds for years to come, especially with that shoulder issue.”
The director praised Arjun for keeping his performance grounded, calling it "pitch perfect." He noted that even the more unrealistic scenes felt authentic, creating a seamless blend where it’s hard to tell if the character is driving the film or vice versa. He mentioned that Arjun's consistency shines not just in his body language but also in his emotional depth, whether it’s the mix of hurt and ego when the CM won’t take a picture with him or the need to drink to swallow his pride and apologize.
He wrapped up his thoughts in his usual style, saying, "I hate to say it, but after thoroughly enjoying the journey with Pushpa, I think even the real @alluarjun might not measure up."”
About Pushpa 2: The Rule
Sukumar’s Pushpa 2: The Rule picks up where Pushpa: The Rise left off, diving into Pushpa Raj's journey as he takes charge of the red sanders smuggling operation after rising from a daily laborer. Rashmika portrays his wife, Srivalli, who fiercely supports him against his distant family. Fahadh steps in as police officer Bhanwar Singh Shekawat, still dealing with the embarrassment he suffered in the first film. The movie wraps up by laying the groundwork for Pushpa 3: The Rampage.
