Sukumar's new film, "Pushpa 2: The Rule," starring Allu Arjun, Rashmika Mandanna, and Fahadh Faasil, is dropping on the evening of December 4. The producers have decided to raise ticket prices, with some theaters in Delhi and Mumbai going for over ₹2000. People aren't too happy about it, but filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma is sticking up for the move.
Ram Gopal Varma comments on the increased ticket prices for Pushpa 2.
RGV recently posted a long note in Telugu on X (formerly Twitter), taking a jab at those complaining about higher ticket prices, all in his usual style. He compared the entertainment scene to the luxury market.
He shared an example about a guy named Subbarao who opened an idli restaurant and charges ₹1000 per plate because he thinks his idlis are top-notch. But he pointed out that if customers feel those idlis aren’t worth the price, they just won’t go there. In that case, Subbarao is the only one who loses out.
Ram Gopal Varma went on to call people who say “Subbarao’s idlis are too expensive for the average person” kind of “silly,” comparing it to whining that a “seven-star hotel is out of reach for regular folks.” He added, “If we’re paying for the vibe at a seven-star hotel, then with Pushpa 2, the vibe is all in the movie.”
He also mentioned that “democratic capitalism thrives on class differences” and that movies are made to earn money, not as a public service. He asked, “When no one complains about the cost of luxury cars, fancy buildings, or designer clothes, why fret over movie tickets? Is entertainment really a necessity? Is it even more important than housing, food, or clothing?” He pointed out that, compared to those basic needs, the ticket for Pushpa 2 is pretty affordable.
Plus, he highlighted that folks can skip watching the movie or wait for the ticket prices to drop. He found it ironic that tickets are selling out so quickly. “Back to Subbarao’s restaurant—his idli price is obviously working. Just look at it: even he can’t find a seat for himself because all the tables are full!”
