Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s action-packed film Animal” has been catching eyeballs ever since its release. The mixed reactions and debates on masculine toxicity and violence have only elevated its popularity. Recently, the film has received Ram Gopal Varma’s praise, as he expressed how the film shattered stereotypes when it comes to success and budget. The director also backed up Vanga in securing a blockbuster hit despite its modest or “cheap budget.”
Ram Gopal Varma defends Animal
Starring Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role, Animal was among the biggest blockbusters of 2023. The movie ended the year on a high note as it brought a wave of success not only for the lead actors but also the supporting cast, including the gorgeous Tripti Dimri. In a recent conversation, Ram Gopal Varma lauded its filmmaker for defying the odds and proving its worth with a success number.
Citing the modest budget of Animal, which cost around 100 crores, the Satya director reflected on the modest budget despite casting an A-list star like Ranbir Kapoor. He even shared Kapoor’s big-budget films that were made with huge production costs and heavy VFX, like Brahmastra and Shamshera. For the unversed, Animal was declared a blockbuster after it raked in over 900 crores globally against its approx. 100 crore budget.
“Sandeep Reddy Vanga proved them wrong because ‘Animal’ was the least expensive film; however, if you look at Ranbir Kapoor in ‘Brahmastra’ or ‘Shamshera,’ ‘Animal’ was the cheapest film in terms of production. He is one of the biggest names, and the film did better than the so-called big production value films. So there are no hard and fast rules,” RGV told Galatta Plus.
Animal Success against the criticism
Lauding Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s unconventional methods to secure a massive hit without special effects or any super fancy budget, the Company director also stated that there are no particular rules for success as different films cater to different audiences.
Comparing Animal and Gadar 2’s audiences, Varma added, “Different kinds of audiences will like different kinds of films. I can’t believe that the same kind of audience will like both ‘Gadar 2’ and ‘Animal.’ Having said that, one can like a certain dish and others can like something else. It is not, ‘I only eat this kind of food.”
Animal also stars Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor, and Bobby Deol. It is currently streaming on Netflix.
