Director Ram Gopal Varma has reportedly been sentenced to three months simple imprisonment in a cheque bounce case by the Andheri Magistrate Court in Mumbai on Tuesday. A Telangana Today report states that after hearing the case for seven years, the Mumbai court issued a non-bailable warrant in his name.
Ram Gopal Varma convicted in cheque bounce case
RGV has been convicted under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, which addresses the dishonour of cheques due to insufficient funds or amounts exceeding the agreed limit. As part of the ruling, he is required to pay ₹3.75 lakh in compensation to the complainant. Should he fail to remit this amount within three months, he will face an additional three months of imprisonment.
The cheque bounce case was initiated in 2018 by a company named Shree, represented by Mahesh Chandra Mishra, against RGV’s business. In June 2022, the director was granted bail after submitting a personal bond along with a ₹5000 security deposit. The magistrate who issued the sentence reportedly indicated that there would be no ‘set-off under Section 428 of the Code of Criminal Procedure’ since RGV was ‘not in custody during the trial’.
It has been reported that the director was absent from the hearing, and a comprehensive judgment is still pending. Nevertheless, he responded to the news on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Regarding the news about me and Andheri court, I wish to clarify that it pertains to a seven-year-old case involving an amount of ₹2 lakh 38 thousand, related to my former employee. My lawyers are handling the matter, and as it is currently in court, I cannot provide any further comments.”
Upcoming work
RGV most recently directed the 2024 film Vyuham, which centres on the premature demise of former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, YS Rajasekhara Reddy. Additionally, he makes a brief appearance in Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD.
The director has recently revealed his plans to direct a film titled Syndicate. In his announcement on X, he stated, “The film is called SYNDICATE. It’s about a terrifying organisation which threatens the very EXISTENCE of INDIA.” He further remarked, “SYNDICATE will be a very SCARY FILM not due to any supernatural elements, but because it will SCARILY expose, what HORRORS HUMAN BEINGS CAN DO.”
