Ram Gopal Varma Reflects on Amitabh Bachchan's Trust During 'Aag'

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma (RGV) recently discussed his experiences during the production of RGV Ki Aag in an interview with Galatta Plus. He highlighted the trust Amitabh Bachchan placed in him, even though the project was a remake of the legendary film Sholay. Additionally, RGV recounted how SS Rajamouli had questioned his film selections during a challenging phase marked by a series of unsuccessful projects.

While reflecting on the creation of RGV Ki Aag, RGV noted that his intention was to develop a unique adaptation of Sholay. He candidly acknowledged that if someone had inquired whether the film could reach the calibre of Satya, he would have struggled to provide a satisfactory response.

Amitabh Bachchan trusted RGV with Aag

When inquired about whether Amitabh Bachchan, who appeared in both Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag and Sholay, had ever doubted his choices, the filmmaker refuted the notion. He elaborated, "That reflected his confidence in me. He did not question my decisions. Their lack of inquiry was reasonable, as I had established my credibility as a director through numerous films. They likely presumed that I was competent in my approach. At that moment, they were unaware of how Aag would ultimately be received. Amitabh may have believed that I was offering a reinterpretation of Sholay."

When SS Rajamouli questioned RGV about his choices

Reflecting on his past setbacks, Ram Gopal Varma (RGV) shared insights regarding his experience with Naach (2004), a film that, similar to RGV Ki Aag, did not perform well at the box office. He recounted a moment when SS Rajamouli challenged his decisions, considering RGV's established reputation as a creative and astute filmmaker. RGV conceded that his failures were a result of insufficient sincerity and self-reflection in his creative endeavours. He recognized his tendency to be negligent and not to take his work seriously, often opting for gimmicks or shock tactics instead of authentic storytelling.

He recalled, "In this context, SS Rajamouli asked me, ‘A person as intelligent and well-read as you, why would you do this?’ I responded, ‘I am not merely a filmmaker; I live my life according to my own principles. In that context, such occurrences take place.’"

Recently, Ram Gopal Varma garnered respect for his honest admission about being overshadowed by the success of his films Satya and Rangeela. In a sincere message on X, the filmmaker assured his audience that he would fully commit to his next project and refrain from creating films solely for shock value. Subsequently, on Wednesday, RGV revealed his forthcoming project titled Syndicate. He characterized it as his most ambitious and daunting work to date, pledging to "cleanse" himself of all his "cinematic sins" from recent years through this new film.
