Ram Gopal Varma Labels Game Changer Box Office Claims as Fraudulent
4 months ago | 5 Views
Ram Gopal Varma has issued a pointed critique of Ram Charan's recent film, Game Changer, casting significant doubt on the film's alleged box office earnings. This criticism follows notable inconsistencies between the box office revenue figures presented by the producers and those reported by industry analysts.
Ram Gopal Varma calls Game Changer box office collections a fraud
On Monday evening, Ram Gopal Varma took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his views with a hint of sarcasm, stating, "If @ssrajamouli and @SukumarWritings have propelled Telugu cinema to unprecedented heights in real-time box office collections, thereby creating genuine shockwaves in Bollywood, then those responsible for G C have demonstrated that the South is remarkably adept at being a FRAUD."
The filmmaker raised concerns regarding the film's box office performance and remarked, “I genuinely do not understand who is behind this deeply humiliating insult that seeks to undermine the remarkable accomplishments of the South, which have been made possible by films like Baahubali, RRR, KGF 2, and Kantara. All of their successes are now cast into doubt due to the claims made by G C.”
The filmmaker absolved Game Changer producer Dil Raju but wondered who was behind the 'lies'. He wrote, "I don’t know who’s behind these unbelievably naive lies, but for sure it can’t be producer Dil Raju because he is a truly grounded realist and he’s incapable of the fraud that is being committed."
The discrepancies in Game Chamger's box office numbers
Producers of Game Changer announced that the film generated ₹186 crore on its opening day, January 10, a figure disclosed on the film's official social media account. If accurate, this would position the film as the fourth-highest opening Indian film to date, trailing only behind Pushpa 2, Baahubali 2, and RRR. However, industry sources indicated that the film's global opening was below ₹100 crore, with some outlets, such as Sacnilk, reporting a total of merely ₹80 crore.
In response to the purportedly exaggerated box office figures for Game Changer, Ram Gopal Varma expressed scepticism regarding the film's claimed budget. In a separate tweet, he stated: “If Game Changer cost around ₹450 crore, then RRR, with its unprecedented visual appeal, should have been valued at ₹4,500 crore. Furthermore, if Game Changer's first-day earnings are indeed ₹186 crore, then Pushpa 2's collections should logically reach ₹1,860 crore. The crux of the matter is that the essential principle of TRUTH is that it must be plausible, and in the case of Game Changer, a falsehood should appear even more credible.”
Directed by Shankar, Game Changer features Ram Charan, Kiara Advani, and SJ Suryah. The political thriller experienced a robust opening at the domestic box office; however, it has since seen a significant decline, particularly on Monday. After four days of release, it has not yet achieved a domestic net of ₹100 crore.
