Filmmaker Rakesh Roshan has recounted his experiences of being shot in 2000 and receiving a cancer diagnosis in 2018. In an interview with News18, Rakesh revealed that he was exercising with his son, actor Hrithik Roshan, on the morning of his surgery.

Rakesh Roshan opens up on getting shot, cancer

Rakesh remarked, "I approached the situation lightly even after being shot. I made jokes to ensure those around me did not feel that life was taking a turn for the worse. I maintained this attitude when I was diagnosed with cancer as well. Hrithik and I were at the gym on the morning of my surgery day."

"We exercised for an hour, after which I prepared and headed to the hospital. My surgery was scheduled for one o'clock, and by four, I was settled in my room. I was walking by five o'clock. I firmly believe that it is all a matter of mindset. It ultimately depends on how resilient you can be in order to overcome your challenges," he continued.

About Rakesh's cancer diagnosis, shooting incident

In 2018, Rakesh was diagnosed with throat cancer. In a conversation with SpotBoye in 2019, he expressed, “I had an instinct from the very beginning that I had cancer. I was at Hrithik’s residence when I received the call confirming my biopsy results. It was December 15, 2018, and I remember it vividly... I felt a surge of fear when informed that my tongue might require surgery and grafting. I responded, ‘I don’t want to go through that.’ Having cancer on the tongue is particularly daunting."

Recently, Hrithik shared his thoughts on the shooting incident involving his father in the Netflix India docuseries The Roshans. "I still struggle to recall feeling afraid for my dad. He was like Superman. Even during his hospital stay, I caught a glimpse of blood-stained white sheets, which startled me momentarily. However, in the next instant, my dad was engaging in conversation, laughing, and appeared to be managing the situation with ease,” Hrithik stated.

Rakesh was shot just a week after the release of Hrithik's debut film, Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai. It was directed by Rakesh. Two men linked to the Mumbai underworld shot at the veteran filmmaker, injuring him gravely.
