In the year 2000, shortly after the premiere of Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, Rakesh Roshan became the target of gunfire from members of the Bush gang. The filmmaker narrowly avoided a fatal outcome and was subsequently provided with government security. However, Roshan has since disclosed his deep-seated fears that his own security personnel might pose a threat to his life.

Rakesh Roshan on being scared of his guards

Rakesh Roshan expressed his concerns regarding his security detail during an interview, reflecting on that distressing period: “Regardless of the number of security personnel surrounding you, you remain a vulnerable target. If someone is determined to harm you, the guards will be ineffective. Following the incident, I was assigned two armed guards, and I would sit in the front of the vehicle while they occupied the back, which heightened my anxiety. They are seated behind me with guns. If something were to occur, they could potentially harm me.”

Roshan further noted that he began to experience feelings of claustrophobia due to the constant presence of his security detail. “Whenever I went for a walk on the beach, those two guards accompanied me. I found myself questioning, ‘What is happening?’ Consequently, I requested the removal of my security detail. I felt capable of managing on my own. We will see what unfolds,” the filmmaker stated.

The attack on Rakesh Roshan

The attack on Rakesh Roshan occurred on January 21, 2000, when he was shot at by two assailants near his office in Santacruz, Mumbai. One bullet struck his left arm, while another grazed his chest. Following emergency surgery, he emerged without serious injury. Subsequent police investigations revealed that the assassination attempt was orchestrated by the Budesh gang, which had been in conflict with Roshan over extortion demands.
