The latest Netflix docu-series, The Roshans, offers fans an inside look at the family of the late composer Roshan. It includes interviews with Rakesh Roshan, Rajesh Roshan, and Hrithik Roshan, plus appearances from various Bollywood stars. The creator of the show, filmmaker Shashi Ranjan, shares insights about how it all came together in a chat with an online media.
Rakesh Roshan felt hurt by the lack of attention from his father, Roshan
Ranjan saw an opportunity to share the story of the late Roshan through this series, which motivated him to create it. "There's a lack of audiovisual documentation in India, so I felt there was a gap to fill. Plus, Roshan saahab's contributions really speak for themselves," he explains.
Roshan Nagrath, known simply as Roshan, was a music composer for Hindi films from 1948 to 1967. He produced numerous hits and timeless classics, yet his name often gets overlooked compared to his peers like Naushad and Laxmikant-Pyarelal, or even younger talents like RD Burman. Ranjan mentions that this oversight bothered Roshan's son, filmmaker Rakesh Roshan, which fueled the creation of the docu-series.
He shared a memory, saying, "I was at Rakesh's farmhouse in Khandala, and I often sing Roshan saahab's songs. He really enjoyed it. Then he told me about a company that released a retro music instrument featuring playlists from various composers, singers, and lyricists. He said, 'Shashi, I felt so disappointed when I searched for my father's name, and it wasn't included.' I think that really affected him."
The story of how the Roshans came to be
Ranjan mentioned that he proposed a documentary about Roshan saahab's life, saying "people need to know about his contributions" and that "his legacy deserves more recognition." Rakesh Roshan later came up with the idea of a docu-series focusing on the younger members of the family, leading to the creation of The Roshans.
You can now catch The Roshans streaming on Netflix.
