2 months ago | 5 Views
Netflix's latest documentary, The Roshans, highlights the contributions and accomplishments of a lesser-known Bollywood dynasty. This docu-series explores the legacy of composer Roshan, along with the careers of his sons, Rakesh and Rajesh, and his grandson, Hrithik. In a conversation with HT shortly after the premiere, Rakesh Roshan shared his thoughts on the series and reflected on the experience of revisiting his life during the filming process.
Rakesh Roshan on not being publicity savvy
The Roshans highlight that Roshan was not particularly adept at managing publicity. Writer Javed Akhtar notes in one episode that he neither promoted himself nor allowed others to do so on his behalf. Rakesh Roshan asserts that this characteristic is inherent to the entire family. "I believe it is in our DNA. We are not skilled at self-promotion. We prefer our work to convey our message, but we cannot promote ourselves," he states.
When questioned about whether this trait presents challenges in an industry that often prioritizes self-promotion, the filmmaker acknowledges, "Indeed, it does create difficulties; however, in a way, God has equipped us with the resilience to cope. He has also granted us a series of successes, allowing our work to speak for itself, thus eliminating the need for self-promotion."
Rakesh Roshan on reliving past traumas
The Roshans devotes an entire episode to Rakesh Roshan's journey, detailing his evolution from a celebrated actor to a successful director. The narrative also highlights some of the more challenging experiences in his life, including his battle with bankruptcy and a life-threatening attack by gangsters. Rakesh Roshan reflects, "I believe that everything that occurred was ultimately beneficial. I gained invaluable lessons from those experiences." He further elaborates, "When Shashi would pose his questions from behind the camera, I would quickly forget my identity as Rakesh Roshan, the filmmaker. I would become a son, a husband, a brother, and a father, reliving those moments effortlessly."
The Roshans emphasize the family's enduring legacy. When inquired whether his father imparted any significant wisdom that he subsequently shared with Hrithik, the filmmaker replied, "My father did not explicitly teach me anything. I absorbed knowledge from him naturally. In the same vein, I did not formally instruct Hrithik; he learned independently. However, the essence of our lessons has always been about authenticity. When you gaze into the mirror, it is essential to be at peace with your reflection."
Directed by Shashi Ranjan, The Roshans is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
