Following the success of his Netflix project, Black Warrant, Vikramaditya Motwane is poised to direct a sports biopic, according to reports. This film will focus on the life of former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly and is said to star Rajkummar Rao in the lead role. In a previous interview, Ganguly affirmed that Rajkummar would portray him. A recent report has provided details about the filming process, indicating that the preparation will be rigorous.

Sourav Gnaguly's biopic shooting details

Mid-Day has announced that Rajkummar Rao is poised to star in a sports biopic centered on Sourav Ganguly, with Vikramaditya Motwane at the helm. Should everything proceed as planned, this project will reunite them following their successful collaboration on the critically acclaimed survival thriller, Trapped (2016).

A source associated with the film revealed, “Vikramaditya has been developing a sports movie based on a real-life athlete. It delves into a protagonist who deviates from the typical underdog narrative often found in sports biopics. Raj is enthusiastic about the fundamental concept, and he is aware that Vikramaditya will challenge his creative limits.”

The source additionally revealed, "The biopic is set to have a rapid two-month filming schedule, which is characteristic of Vikramaditya's style. However, this will be preceded by several months of rigorous preparation."

In a previous press conference, Sourav mentioned, "Based on the information I have, Rajkummar Rao is set to portray the titular character... however, there are scheduling conflicts... which means it will take over a year before the film is released."

Prior to Rajkummar's involvement, names like Ranbir Kapoor and Ayushmann Khurrana were associated with the biopic, but it now appears that Rao will take the lead in the project.

Reports suggest that the biographical film will center on Sourav Ganguly's leadership as the President of the BCCI and his impact on the Cricket Association of Bengal. Additionally, some sources indicate that preliminary preparations have begun, with the filmmakers having met Sourav Ganguly at Eden Gardens.

Rajkummar Rao's work front

Rajkummar is recognized as one of the most adaptable actors in the industry. In terms of upcoming projects, he will appear in Bhool Chuk Maaf alongside Wamiqa Gabbi. Additionally, he is set to feature in the gangster drama Maalik, which is scheduled for a theatrical release on June 20, 2025.

In the meantime, the release of Bhool Chuk Maaf, originally slated for April 10, has been delayed, and it will now premiere in theaters on May 9. The film, set in Varanasi, follows the story of a couple, Rajkummar and Wamiqa, who are on the verge of marriage.
