Recent statements from Rajkumar Hirani indicate that his latest film, Dunki, did not achieve the financial goals he had set. The film stars Shah Rukh Khan and prominently features Taapsee Pannu in the leading female role. Additionally, Vicky Kaushal, who garnered significant acclaim for his performance in a 2023 film, made a notable cameo appearance in Dunki.

Making of Dunki and its unique story

In an interview conducted by Komal Nahta for his YouTube channel Game Changers, Hirani elaborated on the production of Dunki and its performance at the box office. The filmmaker, alongside Abhijat Joshi, is dedicated to developing original concepts for films that are unprecedented. The inspiration for Dunki emerged when he learned about a location where people were unable to leave India due to a lack of proper documentation, specifically in Ludhiana. The narratives he encountered were both amusing and poignant. Interestingly, many of these so-called English teachers seem unaware of the content they are instructing.

Hirani expressed that the task of crafting the screenplay for the film was certainly a significant challenge. However, over time, they grew confident that the film fulfilled its commitments to both entertainment and storyline. Nevertheless, it remains difficult to anticipate audience reactions to the narrative, as individuals have varied responses to different tales. He has yet to determine what elements resonate effectively.

While they attribute some of their success to luck, they diligently invest effort into all their projects, which occasionally leads to favourable outcomes.

The Hirani promptly addressed the inquiry regarding "One film that did worse than you anticipated at the box office," citing Dunki as his response.

Dunki narrates the lifelong aspiration of four friends hailing from a small town in Punjab, who dream of escaping to England. However, they face a significant obstacle: they lack both the necessary visa and tickets. The turning point occurs when a soldier disembarks from a train, altering their fate. He pledges to guide them to their desired homeland. The narrative unfolds as an engaging and poignant tale of a courageous journey across the sea and desert, while also delving into the depths of their inner thoughts. Throughout this expedition, their courage, intellect, and the tension arising from their differing philosophies will be challenged and shaped. Ultimately, Dunki serves as a love story that explores themes of friendship, borders, homesickness, and affection.
