Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots is a fan-favorite in Bollywood, celebrated for its mix of critical praise and box office hits. Recently, during a chat with Komal Nahta on his YouTube channel, the director shared that he faced some backlash from someone on Aamir Khan’s team about a specific scene. This feedback really opened his eyes to the need for greater awareness in his work.

Hirani came to the realization that he was poking fun at the struggles of poor people in 3 Idiots

When asked about the scene in 3 Idiots where he seemed to mock poor people, Rajkumar said, "I don’t think I got away with it. A guy named Sachin, who works with Aamir Khan, approached me after seeing the film and mentioned, ‘Sir, the movie was great, but I didn’t appreciate one thing—you made fun of the poor.’"

He went on to explain that he never meant to make fun of poverty, saying, "I was actually talking about cinema. Back in the day, black-and-white films often depicted a sick father, an unmarried sister, and a mother struggling to make ends meet. After hearing that feedback, I realized the scene could be seen in a different light and might hurt someone. It taught me to be more mindful. Someone once pointed out that comedy often stems from the hardships of others. When we create humor in films, we might be poking fun at someone. So, as we keep making movies and comedies, there will always be someone who becomes the target of jokes. We need to be aware of that, but at the same time, people should be open-minded enough to take it lightly."

The scene in question shows Aamir and R Madhavan enjoying a meal at Sharman Joshi’s home, where Raju’s (Sharman) mother, played by Amardeep Jha, is humorously seen using the same roller for making rotis and scratching her husband’s chest.

This coming-of-age comedy-drama was crafted by Rajkumar, who took on writing, editing, and directing duties, with Abhijat Joshi co-writing the script. Vidhu Vinod Chopra produced the film, which featured notable performances from Kareena Kapoor, Mona Singh, Boman Irani, and Omi Vaidya. It turned out to be a huge hit at the box office, raking in ₹460 crore globally.
