Director-cinematographer and actor Rajiv Menon who was recently seen in Vetrimaaran's film Viduthalai: Part 2, had some remarks made on how the Tamil film industry is functioning, especially with long and undetermined shooting schedules. The director largely spoke about how the industry is functioning in a "feudal" way, and that making films have now become more erratic.

Rajiv Menon terms Tamil industry 'feudal'

Director and cinematographer Rajiv Menon, who recently portrayed a significant role in Vetrimaaran's Viduthalai: Part 2, shared his insights regarding the current state of the Tamil film industry. He highlighted issues such as inconsistent shooting schedules and the prolonged duration required to complete film projects.

In a recent discussion, Rajiv Menon reflected on his experiences with films like Kadal and Guru, both of which he worked on under the direction of Mani Ratnam. He remarked, "Guru was enjoyable as it was completed in three months. Kadal presented challenges, but when collaborating with Mani Ratnam, one can anticipate the outcome."

Rajiv Menon expressed concerns regarding the current state of the film industry, describing it as having entered an "unplanned stage" where filming can occur at any time and for any duration. He acknowledged that it is acceptable for an individual to focus solely on one project and fully commit to it. However, he criticized directors who expect their teams to accompany them on spontaneous shoots, labeling this approach as a "feudal attitude" that allows for filming whenever inspiration strikes.

Menon emphasized the impracticality of such a method in cinema, which typically involves a crew of 100 to 200 individuals, all of whom are incurring costs. He pointed out that without proper planning, successful production is unattainable. Citing the example of "Jurassic Park," which was scheduled for 78 days but completed in 72, he highlighted significant deficiencies in the current planning and execution of film projects. Furthermore, he noted that the Tamil film industry is facing challenges due to a lack of sufficient producers.

Did Rajiv Menon take a dig at Vetrimaaran?

Rajiv Menon's recent comments have gained significant traction on social media, leading fans to speculate that he may be referring to the filming of the Viduthalai duology alongside Vetrimaaran. Vetrimaaran is recognized for his tendency to make spontaneous decisions regarding extended shooting schedules and to develop the script as filming progresses. Given that the Viduthalai films have exceeded their initial budget, many netizens believe that Rajiv Menon is indeed alluding to Vetrimaaran. However, it is important to note that Menon did not specifically name any director in his remarks.

Currently, Viduthalai: Part 2 is being screened in theaters. The film is set to be available on ZEE5 and OTTplay Premium starting January 17.
