One of the all-time favourite Rajinikanth-starrer films is Muthu, which released in 1995. While there is no doubt that Rajinikanth has a massive fanbase in India, there is another country that has a special love reserved for the film. Yes, Rajinikanth’s Muthu witnessed a successful run in Japan and went on to become one of the highest-grossing Indian films in Japan.
Now, the film is once again in the news, thanks to an advertisement that has been trending on social media and has a special reference to the Thillana Thillana song from Muthu.
Rajinikanth’s Muthu once again trends in Japan
Rajinikanth’s 1995 film Muthu is once again in the news. And Japan is the reason. We already know that Rajinikanth and Meena-starrer Muthu is one of the earlier Indian films to see phenomenal success in Japan. The film was released in Japan in 1998 as Muthu – The Dancing Maharaja and sold out tickets like hot cakes.
Now, after 26 years, Muthu’s legacy still continues. A soft drink ad in Japanese, shows a man drinking a soft drink, as we see the reference to Muthu, as the ad actor breaks into a dance which resembles Thillana Thillana song from Muthu.
Kavithalayaa Productions, which backed the film, shared a clip of the advert and expressed their happiness over the evergreen success of the film.

Muthu is a 1995 Tamil film directed by KS Ravikumar. Headlined by Rajinikanth, who appears in dual roles, Muthu is available for streaming on SunNXT, and the OTTplay Premium app. Also starring Meena, Sarath Babu, Radha Ravi, Senthil, Vadivelu, Jayabharathi, Subhashri and Ponnambalam, among others, Muthu is a remake of the Malayalam film Thenmavin Kombath.
Muthu revolves around a friendship between a zamindar and his loyal servant, despite the class differences. However, after both of them unknowingly fall in love with the same woman, a series of events take place revealing the true identity of the servant and his heritage. Muthu released for Diwali 1995 and went on to become a commercial success. AR Rahman scored the music for the film.
