Raj Shekhar, Lyricist of "Animal" and "Deva," Claims Credit Denied for 30 Songs

Lyricist Raj Shekhar, famous for his hit songs in movies like Animal and the latest Shahid Kapoor film Deva, shared on Sunday that he hasn’t received credit for almost 30 out of the 100 songs he’s written throughout his career.

At the 'Words That Sing' session during the 7th Indian Screenwriters Conference (ISC), organized by the Screenwriters Association of India (SWA), Shekhar stressed how crucial it is for the industry to unite in protecting writers' credits. He mentioned, “We’re in a transitional period as a society. We’re making some errors, but we’re gradually figuring things out. Out of 100 songs, 28-30 of mine aren’t credited to me. That’s just my experience, but think about those who can’t advocate for their recognition. I encourage everyone to look up the lyricist’s name if they enjoy a song. We pour our hearts and souls into our work.”

Shekhar also pointed out the need for changes in the industry to boost creativity. “There’s a disconnect between screenwriters and lyricists. I’ve often received tunes on WhatsApp without any context. The creative teamwork with directors and writers seems to be lacking, unlike the good old days of Raj Kapoor and Shailendra,” he noted.

During the session, which was moderated by screenwriter Hussain Haidry, Shekhar was accompanied by the filmmaker-lyricist duo Siddharth-Garima, who are famous for their work on songs in Bajirao Mastani, Padmaavat, Animal, and Kalki 2898 AD.
